Quote from: Sam Wacker on Apr 25, 2025, 05:41 PMBut to my taste, the  Entertainer styles are much of a muchness. I believe it would take a considerable amount of work to convert these styles to sound anything like Ska or Reggae- the basslines would require excessive intervention for starters.

You ought to learn to move the parts of the styles around from one style to another using COPY and PASTE.

My PSR-SX920 keyboard has 575 preset styles (30 of them are COUNTRY) and then I added 261 of the Genos 2 styles (22 of them are COUNTRY) to it. That is 836 total (52 different COUNTRY styles total). Yet, I have created more than 350 different custom COUNRTY song styles from these styles. If I can use these styles to make all these COUNTRY styles, you could do the same for Reggae music.

Here is the song KOKOMO (I think this one might be Reggae)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7TL8qL2kLY

I recently reworked and added 20 Latin Romantic styles and this week I reworked the 19 NEW Entertainer 2025 style set.

There really are too many styles available now, You can put together any kind of style you want with what is available to SX920, Genos and GENOS 2 keyboard users.

I have posted videos of about 90% the custom styles I have put together as examples of what can be done with these keyboards. Heck, I have even posted hundreds of reworked styles you can use in just about any Yamaha keyboard.

Cheers

Thank you for your comments and your interest. You make valid points about the vast range of styles available. And I have done the copy and paste in the past as you have suggested here.

The Beach Boys, minus genius Brian Wilson, had a massive hit with Kokomo but it's more pop than reggae. More Florida Keys than Kingston Town.

Reggae is alive and well, and if you like 'cultural fusion music' as I do, there is also "Reggaeton" - a Puerto Rican development from Reggae and Hip Hop. Genos 2 has a style for  "Despacito" in the Dance category that can be used as an attempt at the Reggaeton genre alongside many of the Latin styles but I do think these need an update too.

The Genos 2 onboard Reggae styles are good but half a dozen styles to represent a significant music genre?  I guess it's market share all over again.  It's certainly been my experience that reluctant dancers can be coaxed to the dancefloor with a bit of Reggae - it's usually UB40's cover of a Neil Diamond classic Red Red Wine followed by Bob Marley's One Love.

The first YouTube (YT) video shows Conkarah & Rosie Delmar do a Reggae cover of Adele's song Hello. I think it works really well. Listen to the basic drum track that uses the distinctive rim-shots on the snare that are common in the Reggae genre but maybe not so common in country music.  Please be aware that the producers turn the volume up when their logo is briefly on the screen at the start.

In the second YT video, Leigh Wilbraham takes the audio from this song and mixes it for live performance with Genos 2 Reef Reggae style.

I made a style to do the Electric Boogie that is an oldie. I don't use it anymore since I don't play bars anymore.

I did make a 16 song set of traditional Hawaiian songs for gigging. There is only one Hawaiian style to start with. There is a Hawaiian Waltz style but there are no waltz songs in traditional Hawaiian music. I believe Yamaha has even quit putting that style on their keyboards as it is useless.

I don't run into need for reggae beats very often. I did need a reggae style for the song "Chicken Fried" by the Zach Brown Band. I have to use a registration to do that song. The reggae beat is at a different tempo than the rest of the country part of the song, but is works perfect.

I can find a close enough drummer beats for most all my songs in the Yamaha style collect I have. The bass play pattern is also there somewhere among the Yamaha styles too. I have recorded a few bass patterns into styles that I have put together. Only to later find the pattern in a Yamaha style.

The more you work at making your own styles the easier it is to find or create the missing parts you absolutely need to make the style perfect for your needs.

As a UK teenager in the late 60s and 70s, my family enjoyed cheap LPs of reggae versions of almost every successful song, usually released several months after the original version had topped the charts.  They were a real musical pleasure, and often showed great inventiveness and musicality.

I'm sure I remember them too, alongside the covers of popular chart hits that were sold by Woolworth's at a fraction of the cost of a 45 single. And let's not forget the phenomenon of "Northern Soul" where more boys would be dancing to the music than girls.

Dear MadrasGiaguari,

probably it would take much less time if I replied to you in Italian but, as it seems that here english is the official common language, it wouldn't be polite at all. So ok, let me try to explain in english! Of course I'm aware that each Genos factory style may be used to perform a variety of different songs. In the same way I know I can edit a style to fit a song... but it requires an amount of time available that, unfortunately, I can't have. My "complaint" was, in substance, only about the disbalance between the "useful" styles to be edited and the useless ones (for me, of course!). On the other hand, I would be curious to find out how many Genos users in the world prefer a preset schlager style (and I have to add that they sound all, at least to me, so similar) to a different one more usable. Furthermore, I downloaded from Yamaha website an expansion pack called Entertainer 2016 and, exploring those styles, it's difficult to find a substancial difference between them and the new ones. In my personal opinion, anyway, the older ones are much better... So, thanks to Yamaha for providing this expansion pack for free, but it's not useful... for me, at least. Have a nice evening! ;)

Indeed. I have to agree. First time around I got married in Hawaii, loved the music and everything about the islands and people.

Even though the Hawaiian styles were not brilliant as you say - at least on the Tyros 2 - other strumming styles could be used for this song.  A great rendition of Judy Garland with 1.4 billion views on YouTube!  A classic of a classic by the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole.

Glad you liked the reggae version. You will find many versions of Adele's songs on YT that have had the Reggae treatment. Some work and some don't. You be the judge.

Music is such an emotional activity  that I don't think it is off topic to discuss something related that is not strictly in the subject heading for the post. Otherwise why bother with a Forum of individuals? All the technical stuff could possibly be answered by AI in the near future but it wouldn't be the same for me.  It's the human touch that makes this Forum exceptional - even if we don't always agree.

We are talking here about a  "new"  Entertainer Pack – it's strengths and weaknesses. In doing that, posters have given opinions of where Yamaha could do better and how to overcome any perceived limitations.

As an aside and definitely off topic...

Yesterday, Liverpool FC the club I have supported since I was 8 years old, won the English Premier League title. Five years ago Covid stopped the celebrations when Liverpool also won that title. The fans, and players and staff singing and dancing to One Kiss by Dua Lupa, and the ummistakable You'll Never Walk Alone [originally from the musical 'Carousel'] brought many a tear to my eye I can tell you.

Completely off topic, I hope you like this...

Vanny Vabiola is an amazing Indonesian singer doing a straight cover version of Unchained Melody

Yamaha has produced a range of styles that could be used for this song I'm pleased to say.

Completely captivated by her voice. The effortless way she gets those high notes and controls her breathing  is sensational.  Apparently, she won a national talent competition as an  8-year-old. I have no doubt her vocal coach taught her how to use this beautiful voice.

There is just a faint hint of her native tongue(s) [what linguists call 'interference'] in the word "river".
