Question about MobileSheets and Fakebooks / large books, how to organise these?

I've got MobileSheets working nicely with individual sheets I've added, and a couple of smaller books, and I've made a collection or two. Everything is working well.
Now I'm thinking about adding a couple of Fakebooks, large books, and can't decide how best to go about it.

Anyone who has imported Fakebooks or large books, what method did you use? Are you happy with it?

I'm OK with the work involved, just unsure about the organising of it all and welcome any suggestions or ideas.

Large books are no different. To upload to MSP just use the same method you used for small books
If you want the complete fakebook to be added as a separate book file, before importing, choose "Collection" or "Setlist" in Mobile Sheets and then choose "New", name that "New", then OK, and Upload. The fakebook and the songs it contains will be in that "Collection" or "Setlist" separate from other collections or setlists.

Note: If you choose to save file imports to a Collection or Setlist, all the song files within that book will also be added to your Song list in alphabetically order. It is for that reason I first save only those songs that I actually want before uploading to MSP.  It's much easier to remove .pdf files on a PC than on Mobile Sheets. So, you have a choice, pick and choose songs to upload, or save the complete book on Mobile Sheets.

I was just thinking about it all again... I do have some separated book files so it would probably be more sensible to use them. If I wanted to attach a link to it, it would be easier than if in book form. I do like paging through the books though, just stopping where ever takes my fancy. I've done it that way a long time, change is hard!

I haven't looked at Setlists yet, I forgot all about them. Thank you, I'll check them out it does sound like they could suit me.
I might be able to do a collection like '101 Hits or Whatever' and have the individual books 01, 03 be setlists, something like that. I'll have a play 👍

I looked at that, but I'm already using it on a PC so I don't think there's much benefit. Thanks for the suggestion though. I don't, or shouldn't, have too much editing to do, the books are pretty nicely formatted... I do that when I mess up the playing. Sometimes I spend a lot of time tidying up the books 😂

I'm enjoying the MS program though, there's a lot to it when you start using it.
I might need another foot for pedals though.

I'm taking another look after having a go with Collections and Setlists... does the green filter do anything useful? For instance will it hide pieces/sheets that have a setlist so show you those that don't have a setlist?
I'll look for a video on it, but you might know if you use it. 😊
I'd be looking at adding a few Busker books, a way to filter to see only those newly imported 'orphans' would be good I reckon.

I was thinking of using the Ratings temporarily (maybe, not tried) while adding books, but a proper filter would be oh so much better.

Ahhh, some groups can be sorted, including by date created

Some possible tips and ways that I use Mobile Sheets Pro

1. Setlist are nice as you can remove a song but it does not delete the song from the song library. Only removes it from Setlist

2. In Song Library if you delete a song, it's deleted everywhere.

3. Same with Collections. Remove a song, it's removed from Collection, but not deleted in Library.

4. Collections are nice for books

5. Setlists are like Favorites for me.

6. Song Library simply contains are all your uploaded songs in alphabetical order.

7. I use "search" in song library quite a bit

8. I link SX-900 Registrations to MS songs that works both ways on a 15" Android tablet

9. I use auto scroll for multiple page song files. Frees up one less foot pedal

10. I signed up and visit Guets are not allowed to view links. In order to access the links, please Register or Login often

11. I use Mobile Sheets Companion on a PC to help with organizing sheets

12. I use the edit feature in MS for writing dumbing notes directly on sheet music, highlighting chords, break, and so much more.

I consider Mobile Sheets Pro at less than $20 a real bargain. And support is the best 8)

I don't have either Songbook Pro or Mobile Lists - both under consideration. Twenty or so tunes I've committed to memory - like 'Yesterday', 'Tears in Heaven', 'Hotel California' and a pop classics style version of 'Ode to Joy' so these are just set up on registrations.  The rest are PDF arranged alphabetically on a second desktop on the touch -screen laptop.

PDF Gear is one of several PDF apps I use. It's very very quick to extract pages from either Fake Books or Collections or to turn Word Chord and Lyric charts into PDF. Musescore is great for extracting music notation from a MIDI, quicker than Cubase and separating the parts e.g guitar leads.  Not always 100% accurate.

Old -School was just to have the books with tabbed pages on the music rest. No batteries to re-charge or technical mishaps - but technology moves on.  8)

I think I'll use Collection for the type of book collection, Setlists (I don't need this for gigs) for individual book titles, and make a Custom Group for Favourites (or maybe use Ratings for that). I've watched a couple of videos, there are 2 Custom Groups allowed. I'll keep one for emergencies.
So something like Busker Fakebooks as a Collection, BF01, BF02, BFCountry etc as Setlists. Naming to be decided once I see it in action. I'll use separated sheets so I can link a registration if I want that.

I love how easy it is to set the two way communication for registrations. It just works, love it.

I must try out the scrolling feature. I often don't even keep up with myself, but it's worth a try. Today I moved a registration forward when I should have turned a page... it gets complicated  ;D

The pdf editing capability is unreal, I have Nitro Pro and it can't do what MS does. Really very impressive. The support forum is amazing too, he's very attentive.

Yes, books. When I look at my (paper) book collection I can remember when and where I bought them, and why. Maybe just for that one song! It's hard to let go of all that.

I was working in a printers though and I scanned a lot of them, bit by bit. So it makes sense to use them digitally. And MobileSheets is really nice. Since I've discovered even a fraction of what it does, I'm sold. That's probably why I'm taking the time to organise it carefully, so I can just go ahead and use it with no issues once it's populated. There'll be a lot of stuff in it!

I only play a couple of things, but I do lots of piano exercises (some have backing tracks, MS will play them!) and I also love to browse the fakebooks stopping where ever I fancy and have a go with my styles collection. That's why I'd like the books to still be bookish, so I can continue playing that game.

I don't know Songbook Pro but I do believe it's highly regarded. Tough choice.
Is the support for Songbook Pro good? It's excellent for MobileSheets 😁

Aprilla, so much of what you say rings true with me. It's like the old days of going into a listening booth in a record shop. I do remember where I bought stuff and the excitement of getting it home to try it out. The books I took with me to China were about half my physical collection. Before I left I had a local print shop scan them all. We were regular customers there and I was charged less than a tenner (£10) for the work. One thick book that I had changed from stiff bound to spiral bound had tight page margins. They struggled with that so there are some marks on the PDF.

As the sand in the hourglass is getting less and less, I can't really commit to stuff that has a very steep learning curve. It's just great to never stop learning and everyone sharing their experience here truly helps.

There are hundreds of simple songs I play by ear - Auld Lang Sine, Christmas tunes etc. I do miss playing in a band. In China, I played with a saxophonist sometimes and a guitarist other times.  Great to have a transpose button on the keyboard! The saxophonist was part of the hated street police. Their job was to move illegal street traders. He got the gigs and was always late so put on his "blues and twos" (flashing lights) to get to a wedding in the countryside. One of the ethnic singers was getting into her costume in the back seat as we were racing along.  Scary but fun at the same time.

Hi Aprilla
I would suggest that you import the whole file for your Music book.  Then simply use the book mark feature to identify each individual song within the book. Book marking is just like creating an index for the various pages/songs within the book. It may sound like a slow process, but once you have bookmarked a few, it's surprising how quickly you can get through even a large book. Once done you will not be able to tell the difference between single PDF files and a 100 song file.
If you have an IPAD you could use an app called PDF Pro to split the big book into single song files. This is far better than most PSF editors because you simply tick a number of small pics of pages which make up the song. Bill

Thanks so much. I'd read your previous post before I was using the keyboard and MobileSheets together, just getting used to them... so was familiar with some of your method. I asked about making the registrations HERE so I have some Registrations made (step 10) ready to test. I already have some csv files, but can check them against yours to be sure they have the important information. I've downloaded your files, thank you for that.
This is an excellent step by step and will make my job much more fun now I have a better idea how to organise the books in MS.

This is just so helpful and, for the way my brain seems to work, a process of instructions that will lead to success. You've even done the 'donkey work" in making your spreadsheet files available with all the data. Now it's just selecting and editing what's relevant to my own collections. Brilliant stuff.

.

I would have happily paid more , but I got a student discount. The original "guillotining"  [of the music books  8) ] was done by a local college where I was an adult student after I took very early retirement. Needed something that brought me into contact with people again (before I went to China for the second time).

The course was "Sound Engineering" and although we ended up with a piece of paper at the end of it, that was not the reason I enrolled. Access to a well-equipped recording studio was the clincher and the tutor was a great blues guitarist too.  I was older than all the students and the tutor. We were assessed on many things like how to mic a drum kit or an acoustic guitar and how to route stuff through the various sound equipment.  Lots of rack-mounted gear connected to the console. The wiring looked like something you might find in an early post office or a Moog synthesiser.  Great learning experience.

Yes  ;D

If I add a Collection 'Fakebooks' I can then add Setlists to this for each of the fakebooks I have. I can bulk import the named separated sheets per book to a setlist and when looking at setlist 'book', I can click 'load all' and it will be just like browsing through the book. Just what I hoped for.
Filtering the Collections to see only the collection you click shows just the books in that Collection. I might wish it would do this as default, but maybe in the setup there's something to control that. So far when I click Fakebooks it shows me books (setlists) in all Collections until I apply the filter. Not a biggie.

Then I can also add registrations using Muddys step by instructions.

Thank you all for helping me think through this 👍

There is a search bar at the top, just under where the Recent - Pieces/Songs - Collections are. It's in all the screens. You can search all or restrict using the dropdown before it.
I haven't used it yet.

I've just been playing (fighting, I get confused) with MS again so I had a look at Search.

When I enter a word from a song title I know is included in MS (Five, for Take Five) it doesn't find or show it unless I'm in the Pieces/Songs area. But it does find Take Five when there, and I can open it from there. It didn't find it when in Collections or Setlists.

I suppose I'll get used to it all, but I spend a lot of time confused  :-\  which is a pest because it's a really nice program.

I've pretty much settled on using it like this

Albums, for books. Each book title is an Album.

Bookmarks, to mark and easily find favourites. Nice. Beware - it picks up all the bookmarks in all the files so might not suit everyone to use it this way. My books are separated before importing so I deleted all the bookmarks it picked up and am just using what I make in MS. I'll continue to delete as I go.

Collections, make a Collection for the various things I like to do and put the sheets for that in there. So Scores, Piano Sheets, Piano Exercises. And put the Keyboard stuff here too, though I might make a Custom Group tab* for Keyboard specific stuff (that isn't books) if I can figure how they work.

I might fill in the Genre tab too, over time. For mood swings. They happen  ;)

*Beware using the Custom Group yet. I tried it out, it wasn't a great title choice and now I can't get rid of that Group.  There might be a way, but I can't do it... yet, I can only hide it.

It's been a real puzzle deciding how to set it up but once that's sorted I know it will be really nice to use, so worth a bit of time, thought and trouble.

Interesting approach. It's likely I will choose Mobile Sheets having skimmed the online manual and seen the enthusiasm and support on here. The program/app seems to cover everything I need to do. The Manual copyright latest date is 2021 - that can't be right, surely? Not downloaded yet as I'm still considering Windows or Android for a new tablet. I want as much synchronisation, interfunctionality as possible and never went down the Apple route (due to what we used in a work environment).

My approach will be to use Excel to build the database. That way if I change my mind I still have the data. Never could understand the difference between Albums and Collections.

I've used Singles as a heading, so complete pieces of music, lead sheets and chord charts will go here. Bound books will go in Collections and I've used the ID field for an alpha abbreviation of the title of the collection. My plan is start with sheet music then add the other types to the spreadsheet, The advantage is I'll try the program out with sample data and headings and, by relevant searches, see if it suits the way I organise myself when I'm ready to play. I'm also considering BPM as a heading as most of my performance stuff has this included. See the illustration below. If there's anything glaringly wrong, please tell me.

My approach is different maybe, but probably so is my use(s). It's all hobby though.

Never could understand the difference between Albums and Collections.
Yeah LOL I get this. I was very confused for a while. I still couldn't describe them but I think I've got them working OK for me now.

I just started adding things, liked or didn't like how it was working out, deleted the lot and started again. Shake and repeat a few times, but I think it'll work for me now.
I've done some populating, with minimal information, and will fill any gaps as I go. I'm not too pushed about all the details, yet anyway. I've put in whole (separated, sheets named) books as Albums (so don't need page numbers) even if I'm not likely to use some of the titles, and will just fill in details I want as I use any songs. It's largely copying how I've been using my books and sheets, but nicer because it links.
I filled in a few Artists as I went along, but I'll just do whatever I feel wants doing as I go. It'll stay a work in progress.

I have 'Piano Sheets' in Collections so will likely add 'Lead Sheets' for the loose keyboard sheets, as it has this as a Tag in 'Type' and I've used it while adding the Hits books.... and it makes sense LOL

Some of my exercises use backing tracks and I like how MS indicates this. It has no other visual indicators though (and none planned), so am currently working out how to visually know if a piece has been linked to the 720, and if it's just a style or a registration sequence. I'm testing with a Custom Group 'Linked' and Style, Sequence as the tags (to keep track), and might just edit the title for the visual cue (Sty) (Seq). I'll be editing as I add the link anyway.

I took some screen shots so I could remember how I liked it before I did the final clean up and started properly  ;D
I think it's shaping up nicely. I hope you can get it to suit you too.

I wish we could edit our posts. Above I said this -
QuoteBookmarks, to mark and easily find favourites. Nice. Beware - it picks up all the bookmarks in all the files so might not suit everyone to use it this way. My books are separated before importing so I deleted all the bookmarks it picked up and am just using what I make in MS. I'll continue to delete as I go.
But I have found you can turn that off in Settings, so it's no longer an issue, for me.

And the Custom Group does not delete, you just hide it and can rename it at will, if you ever want to use it just show it again.

Looks like you are very much on top of this Mobile Sheets procedure. And it seems that we are not too disimilar in approach.

Right now, in-between repairs to my late grandmother's house and domestic duties, the Genos 2 is now a hobby, just like you.
The drummer who was in Hamburg at the time of The Beatles and was going to bring his kit and leave it in the house so we could jam, is now in hospital for major surgery.

My next door neighbours are 5 freshmen undergraduate students at LIPA (Liverpool Institue of Performing Arts). Four males and a single female they are all musicians and singers. I plan to put on some food and drink and we will have a jam in the very near future.
They went out with their parents over Christmas and one parent said to me: "I hope they don't make too much noise". "No problem", I replied [thinks 900 watts of power in my front room, if needed] and they may be " Tomorrow's superstars". Very different bunch than the former students who were doing sound engineering and theatre arts. LIPA was the brainchild of Sir Paul McCartney.

There are also groups that play in the large public park nearby in the warm weather. All acoustic though. Perhaps I can get hold of a Jackery type generator.

Thanks for your feedback.

It sounds ideal. I was following a post lately where they discussed how 'noise' is actually preventing people from being able to practise or even perform at home. It's hard to believe neighbours, even strangers, would prevent a child (or anyone) from learning or practising but it's happening. Both are so necessary esp if there are to be any Tomorrow's Superstars!! I think you can actually get a permit in Germany to allow you to practise (make noise) for one hour a day. This from an operatic singer, who can at least control the noise, but is prevented from practising 'sing' at home outside this timeframe. It's a strange world.

If you think of an album as a book eg busker book 1 it has 101 songs in it. so you can create an album that has 101 Songs.

To do this use a CSV file (excel) to create 101 entries (as in my previous post)
Make sure the correct page numbers are used and not the pages listed in the index of the book

Import said CSV file into Mobilesheets (call it 101 busker book 1)

use the 101 busker book 1 PDF to link the CSV of the same name.

Make sure all the song names are the same (this will be used later).

Now you should have an album in mobilesheets with 101 songs in it.

Now create a folder of registrations with 101 of them in it (these can be blank to start of with)

Rename these regs to the name of the songs in the album/Book

I use Bulkrename (freeware) to do lots of files at once

Now its time to link the songs in the Album with the registrations that were created

create a new playlist (same name as the Album eg 101 busker book 1) using the regs created in the new folder of regs 101 Busker book 1

load the Album (101 Busker book 1) when in Mobilesheets

Have the playlist loaded as well

right click on the first song it should have a tick in the box and the edit tab should be visable at the top of the screen

press the edit buttom

press the MIDI nutton

A screen showing the link nutton (looks like a piece of chain)

Press the link button (it should show the path to the registration)

If it does not delete whatever is in the big box and press a different song in the playlist then the required song again

Repeat for all songs (a pain but worth it)

Save when prompted

I might of missed some steps out as I am doing this from memory.

things created

CSV file
new folder of Regs
New Playlist

Start small a book with a handfull of songs EZ-play books are good ones to try

I have managed to do the 1200 songs in the Bumper book (took a bit of time (lock down time))

I have 288 albums.Books and 22674 songs in them nearly all linked through Playlists

Load a Album in MS and the songs are loaded so are the Regs
load a playlist pick a song and the sheet music is loaded

Hope this helps
