This sign comes up on my SX 900 when ever I try to make a audio quick recording. I think it is because I have both USB sticks plugged into a  4 way Hub. I can do an audio quick  record if I don't use a hub, and plug both usb sticks into the back of my SX 900.  The Hub works very well when I am doing other things, but always  refuses to cooperate when I want to record my playing a song.

Hi YammyFan,

Are you using a "passive" (aka "bus-powered") USB Hub (which draws its power from the SX900 via the USB connection)? It is possible that two USB sticks connected to the Hub do not get enough power (at least not for high-performance use such as Audio recording, where a relatively large amount of data has to be written to the stick in real time). In this case, I recommend using an "active" (aka "self-powered") USB Hub that has its own power supply.

Each of the two USB-to-Device terminals can supply a maximum current of 500 mA (according to the USB 2.0 specification). If you connect a "passive" Hub and 2 USB sticks to it, all three devices have to share the 500 mA mentioned, so that the current may no longer be sufficient for certain applications such as Audio recording.

By the way, the manual explicitly points out that you should connect a USB Display adapter directly to a SX900's USB-to-Device terminal, i.e. NOT use a HUB. So there is definitely a technical difference between connecting USB devices directly and connecting them via a Hub.

Another thought: The USB stick in question may become a bit slower overall when connected via a Hub, so that the writing speed is no longer sufficient for Audio recording.

Best regards,
Chris

Thank you, Chris. Yes, I have  been using a passive one.  I did not know that it was possible to buy one with its own power supply and I will look into  that  . Also, thank you for the other things you have mentioned. I didn't know that stuff, and it important background information. I'm pretty sure that your post will be read by other members, and the time that you spent answering my problem will resonate with someone else. Wonderful !

Thanks for your kind feedback, YammyFan!

You can download the current version of the "Compatible USB Device List" for the SX900 by clicking the following link. In addition to many USB stick models, you will also find some USB Hubs in this list that have been tested by Yamaha with the SX900. However, I haven't checked which of these Hubs are "self-powered" yet.

By the way, the Hub you are currently using may already have an external power supply socket. Then you would only have to buy a suitable 5V power adapter.

Best regards,
Chris
