I post this here because this board is primarily slanted toward Apple iOS products. But this is not an iOS post. As a Macintosh user, I use Parallels to run some of the programs linked through this forum that are Windows only. But I recently came across an application called PlayOnMac which is intended to allow the simple installation and execution of popular Windows games on MacOS. Based on Wine, it won't run every Windows program. For many Windows games, there are pre-developed PlayOnMac scripts that make it far simpler to install and execute individual programs than with using Wine.

There is no previously written install script for XG Works for PlayOnMac but to my great surprise, I was able to successfully manually install and run Yamaha's XG Works software on my Mac without Parallels or Windows. I haven't extensively tested XG Works yet to see if I can "break" it but it seems stable so far. If it will save me from running Parallels and dedicating a couple of CPU cores and a big chunk of RAM to Windows, I'll be very happy. I'll definitely be trying some of the other Windows programs linked at PSR Tutorial. The software is free and does not require purchasing Windows or Parallels:  www.playonmac.com

That is a great and wonderful information, I've found that there are a lot of very good utility apps, unfortunately only run, on pc windows base software. I haven't found a Mac solution for many of those apps , not any practical alternative, perhaps using Apple Parallel software for some,  but is not a very good and practical solution. The problem is getting worst now, because of the new Apple M1 chips in the their laptops (macbooks) there is no "boot camp alternative" in the new Apple M1 laptops as it was before, and this problem guides you to buy parallel, install a windows partition and a lot of problems involved. It seems that the future will be, at least for Apple, to be M1 chips, leaving intel behind, and probably intel will change his architecture also for PC in the near future. So it would be good idea to start replacing or finding those good utility apps to run on Macs for making digital music task easier.

Please let us know if PSRUTI and other good apps run with this option?

Thanks jcoo980 a lot and best regards to all.

Very interesting! I just purchased a MacBook Air M1. Let us know. I understand there is a n app called Rosetta that make windows apps run on the M1 machines.

Mac Rosetta is an application that runs in a second stage in the mac laptops and what it does is, permits that the intel based apps run in the Mac M1, with out it, all the programs/apps based on intel, can not be interpreted and run. This is for "Mac" apps that are based on intel architecture, not for apps that run or made for windows pc. The idea of Rosetta, is to give time to software developers to change or update their apps for the new M1 chip architecture.

Rosetta was also the name of the OSX Tiger app that allowed Mac programs written for the PowerPC CPU to run on Intel CPUs. By the time OSX Lion was released that version of Rosetta was no longer supported. Rosetta 2 has now been created to allow programs written for Intel CPUs to M1 on Big Sur.

Now if I could just get my old TRS-80 games to play on my iMac. But there's that darn cassette drive issue...

Hello Jcook980,

I was able to buy a new MacBook Air M1, and read your post regards XGworks, I have been trying to install the software using PlayOnMac, but unfortunately without any positive results. I had no problem installing PlayOnMAc, but I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong when installing XgWorks, don't know if I have to download the 32 or 64 bit exe file, and what other considerations to take care. If its posible for you, could you give us a detailed explanation of the steps and procedures for installing this very good option for us having Mac machines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best Regards

Bernardo.
