I myself think that the 2.0 update is most difficult for anyone who does not have computer knowledge. Yamaha has done a poor job with this
Update and many will be stuck with problems. Many will disagree with me and that's ok. We all have a right to voice our opinions. Lloyd
PS: I have been in contact with Yamaha  and am told that the new styles and voices . must be loaded using the expansion manager. I do not  use expansion manager so I find the update of no use. It's a money maker for Yamaha. Yes,I will receive some nasty replies but that's expected so
I will not look ar this pose again.

Toril S

You make a post and will not look at the replies from your friemds here??  It may be we can help you. As for your statement that the YEM software is difficult I sgree with you. But it is managable.

I agree with Lloyd, it is all very difficult.

I have been thinking about updating my Genos to ver 2.0 BUT there are too many things that can go wrong. I have watched a few videos, read many posts here and I still don't know what exactly I am supposed to do to back-up before doing the update! Furthermore, installing expansions without deleting the existing ones is another worry for me.

In an ideal world, here is what I would like to do:

- Keep all my settings and data on my Genos.
- Update to ver 2.0
- Install the new superior pack etc
- and at the end of all this, to still have all my old settings and my data on my Genos.

Currently, I think there is too much that can go wrong and there is too much to read and understand just to do an update and/or install an expansion pack with making sure nothing goes wrong.

Toril is right too, it wouldn't be right to voice a concern but not to come back see if a resolution has been offered.

I think the solution for people like me would be for someone to do one post with clear instructions of all the steps including preparations (backing up etc), downloading and installing the update and the expansion packs.

I found that one of the best informative  videos to watch on how to load the new V2 software  update was Heidrun  on Soundwonderland on YouTube,  the first half is in German,  second half is English, this shows absolutely  everything  on how to save things before  loading, step by step.  I was worried also about doing these updates, but have done them all successfully, the only one I have had a problem with was the new playlist download, which plays everything ok on Registrations,  but the playlist itself couldn't  find the files when I ticked them to play, so I have to figure this problem  out tomorrow. I must admit that Yamaha  needed to make much clearer instructions for a vast majority  of us, certainly  wasn't  straight  forward for me. ;)

It's sad to see that some think it's more difficult than it really is.
If we manage to use a PC / computer, and also manage to power on and use Genos, we also can do the update.
It's many great posts here about how to do, and if look at Heidrun's video, that is both in German and English language, I think most users will manage to perform the update perfectly. Also to install the Superior Pack is easy, even without Yem.

If go to aprox 36:00 minutes, the English part start.

Watch the video once, then follow it, and pause where needed to follow with your Genos during the steps. 👍

EDIT:  Woops, wrote and posted pretty much the same as Lyndyloo, but good things don't hurt much if be repeated. 😁

The difficult part for me are those different pack installation files!! If you use the wrong one you lose everything! Or if you forget  to tick all your other packs they vanish into thin air when you load a new one. Scares the heck out of me!

Been there, done that. 😁
It's a learning curve, but, it should be possible to add one ore more packs without format flash and do full Expansion install every time.

To reiterate what I said earlier, I think 2.0 is straight forward with a Genos right out of the box that has 1.40 or 1.41 on it. When there are a billion different ways people have customized their Genos, that's when the trap doors open up. Add to that, the pathetic documentation. Why are we all relying on thrid-party contributions to figure out this update, all while hoping we don't destroy literally thousands of working hours? Why???

Yamaha is king when it comes to hardware and software. As for telling users how to use it, they aren't even housebroken.

Agreed, Lee!
I was lucky, I had just bought my Genos, and had not made many adjustments to it, but the few I had made were gone.
For me the scary part in YEM are those different installation files, that have almost the same name, and if you choose a wrong one everything goes out the window. That shouldn't be like that. That is what confuses everyone. If packs could just be copied to your computer like any other file and stay put untill you deleted it it would be great. In your computer, unless you save a file with the same name, your files do not get deleted when you add new ones!!

Hi Toril,

I haven't used the YEM software so I'm not familiar with the file naming conventions. You made a good point about file attribute naming. Even Microsoft (MS) with all their annoying software bugs had the correct idea when they changed their Office software formats. Prior to 1997 (I believe), a Word document had the .doc attribute. As documentation demands increased, MS had to create a compressed format for their original document formats. They re-named it .docx. It's easy to see the difference, and yet the naming remains familiar with the addition of the letter x. At a glance, you can see if the document has the original or compressed format.

It seems to me that this update has been made a bit awkward by the decision by Yamaha to wipe out all custom settings, including ones that can't be saved off to backup file. Many people have been caught out by not even knowing what settings have been erased, because they might have set them two years ago and never changed them since. Some official guidance on which settings need to be manually restored might have helped.

Even better, this update should have included the option to create a single backup file that just snapshots absolutely every user setting so that the next one is easier!

Hi Toril,
Once you install 2.6 YEM and load your packs in they will stay there. Add the new superior pack into the YEM and you can then include it in with all your other packs when you make an install pack by ticking all the packs you want.
The packs will always stay in the YEM and as you add new packs you can use the save as CQI and it will add this pack without formatting the memory.
