After exhausting all  possibilities I've come to the conclusion that the keyboard is faulty. It cannot read the v 1.4  usb in any of the ports. I was trying to test this theory by reinstalling  v1.3 which is running on the Genos at the moment but I can't find it on the Yamaha website to download. Would anybody know where I can find v 1.3  or recommend another way to test if the USB ports are working ok.

Stijn

Here is the 1.30 version:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/o1pes8rsmqtr6dk/genos_v130.zip?dl=0

Did you Unzip the file?
Did you only copy the file GENOSSETUP.PRG to the Root of a USB drive?
Did you remove all other USB drives?

Did you press and hold the START/STOP button of the Style section while switching on the Genos?

Sorry for all these 'obvious' questions, but these things were the cause for others not to succeed in updating.

Yes I have tried all those things. The genos does not see the usb.  I will have to return it to Yamaha and see what they can do.

robinez

you probably did this, but did you format the usb stick on the Genos?

When i just got my Genos is copied some styles to the usb stick that i had. When i used that stick on the genos the stick was completely empty on the genos. On my computer it showed me that there were files on it. Then i formatted the usb stick on the genos and copied the files again on the usb stick on my computer. Then the usb stick worked flawlessly on the genos (it was a 64 gigabyte usb stick that i also used to install the 1.4 upgrade)

EileenL

Can you see anything else on your USB sticks Like Styles , Songs or Registrations. If so there is nothing wrong with the keyboard USB ports.

I've just successfully installed 1.40. I followed the instructions on the site. I formatted the USB on keyboard. Then downloaded the  zip file, unzipped and put the file onto the root. It is a 16Gb and I did it on the front port  ,I left the stick underneath. It only took about 4 mins and cross fingers everything is working.

unfortunately, you are not the only one who can not update 1.4

EileenL

I fail to see why a few of you are having such problems. If you are following the instructions to the letter there is no reason why the update will not install.

of course, just like in the pictures. the first photo is the last one that pops up.

I wanted to say again that I did update 1.3 and it went without a problem..!!

Alfred59

This is the message I get every time I insert the usb "please insert  the  install media". No other message comes up no matter how long I hold on. The file is unzipped and at the root level, the usb has been formatted on the genos, I have tried different usb downloads.  I hold the start/stop button with the power up button.. I have checked using another usb stick that the genos can read playlists on it so the USB port is ok (thanks Eileen for the suggestion). I am at a total loss as to what else I can do.

Alfred59

PS I did a factory reset as well.

travlin-easy

Alfred, did you download the zip file to the USB, then unzip it in the USB as well - this could be a problem.

If this is the case, try downloading it to your PC, then unzipping the files in your PC and copying the unzipped files to the root directory of the USB drive. Be sure to remove the old files from the USB before doing this, though or the keyboard would be confused if both versions were on the USB drive.

Hope this helps,

Hi  Gary, the file was unzipped automatically on the iMac. I then transfered the single file not in a folder to the usb at root level. Nothing else is on the usb.Thank you for the suggestion.

AlBags

I took any old USB stick I have been using (although I only use Sandisk)
Unzipped using WINRAR Mobile app. the downloaded .zip from my mobile smartphone through the connected OTG cable/USB stick
Made sure the extracted file was on ROOT of drive and was around 290Mb (as I have MANY other folders on root)
Plugged, restarted Genos, holding reqd buttons.
Update file found straight away, completed upgrade after 2 minutes.
This is just to illustrate that the File System/OS is not fussy, so long as a clean file.

What I DID do was to make sure update file is on ROOT of the drive, and check the display
to ensure it agreed update file found.

I also unplugged all other USB's in use (the one underneath) before update and rebooting.
You really want to reboot with NO USB's occupied first, then reboot with the upgrade stick in.

Chrs!

Alfred:

That message about 'Please Insert Install Media'
You get that every time you insert a stick?

Some OS's will say something similar after a process is started, but then it cant find the file.
Does it say that after reboot?
Are you certain there is NO USB stick installed in no1? (UNDERNEATH slot)

Alfred .. I see you are using MAC.
Can you see the file extension of the extracted file you are putting on the USB stick?

I wonder if MAC is doing something to it.
Can you download to Windows and load to a USB stick from that to test?

Ironically, about a decade ago, when the PSR-3000 had an OS update, there were lots of folks on this forum that underwent the same problem. Back then, the update had to be made using a Smart Media Card. I purchased an inexpensive 128 mb card, put the update on the card, updated my keyboard in 2 minutes, then that card went on a worldwide tour, as I mailed it around the entire globe several times to users who were having update problems. So, this time around, someone who owns a Genos, which I do not, can do the same thing. I probably spent $40 on postage back then, and several others mailed my SM card to others that needed it. It came home about a year later. :) Oh, and everyone that used the card has a successful installation.

Good luck,

Gary

Hi Gary.
Great job you did... But I don't think right now is the same problem. As I said in other posts, I think there is some particular problem with some of Genos keyboards. We know there was multiple lots manufactured from the beginning till now, so my thoughts are that is some particular lot of keyboards which has some components inside which does not accept some parameters inside firmware update file.

Regards,
Vali

Could be some old/different components on motherboard which cannot accept some parameters... There are only suppositions, but regarding of only some of users encountered this problem with update, even after using different USB sticks, this could be a problem. Think about that they told us reinstalling 1.30 works, but installing 1.40 does not work... Which means the procedure is the same but only new update does not work... ???

Vali

Hi Alfred,

there are two different categories of USB sticks: Most sticks are recognized on a PC as a "Removable Disk" (= standard), but some sticks are recognized as a "Local Disk" on a PC:

http://woshub.com/removable-usb-flash-drive-as-local-disk-in-windows-7/

BOTH categories of sticks can be used on Yamaha Keyboards for "normal" use. BUT for Firmware Updates, a stick MUST be used, which is recognized as a "Removable Disk". Please double check this on a Computer OR try other sticks.

Best regards,
Chris

What is the meaning if people write clearly that the 1.3 system is loading on the same stick and the 1.4 system does not load..!!

This is a "tech-tip" on how to make your removable drive to be seen by operating system as Local Drive. There is NO USB stick in the world which is by default seen by an OS as Local Drive. (or I did not found one yet). Removable HDD (passport drives) are seen by OSes like Local Drive because its firmware is made like this, it has that bit set to "as Local Drive", but USB Stick?! Please show me an USB stick which is seen by Windows as Local Drive  :D

Best regards,
Vali

Hi Vali :

Are you serious ?
Might it be possible your suggestions are not realistic, almost a bridge too far ?😟

It is hard to believe the Yamaha electronic - and software engineers are making this kind of mistakes !!!😰
Why should they ?💣

Sorry ... I do not buy that. Nobody will here, I guess.

Yamaha's employees are very serious and reliable people.

Hi Vali,

we (here in the German Yamaha Forum) really HAD such sticks in the past (which are recognized as a "Local Disk" on PC and don't work for Firmware Updates with Yamaha Keyboards). You can contact Frank Steinbrecher (username "frankmusik"). He can tell you more about this topic.

Chris
