Mega Voice question

Hi,

I would like to know the exact definition of a " Mega Voice ".

What makes a Mega Voice so different and useful ?
Are Mega Voices suitable for all Yamaha arranger keyboards ?

In summary - many acoustic instruments can produce different sounds depending on how they are physically played. An artist may use a sprinkling of different techniques during a performance.

If you wanted to reproduce that on a 'traditional' keyboard, you would need a different voice selection for each of those techniques.

On the styles, Yamaha wants the instruments to have some life and variety. But there are a limited number of parts in a style. So, they solved the problem by creating 'mega voices'. These are samples which produce a different sound depending on the velocity of the note. In this way, they can program a style part using a single voice but which has different playing techniques.

Clearly it takes some skill and care to produce a style part with the right velocities in the right places to produce the right sounds. That's why it normally sounds so awful when we load up a mega voice onto R1 and try playing something. They are just not designed for "live" play - they are designed for pre-programmed patterns.

I think Derek gave a good summary of the Mega Voices.  They are multi-sampled Voices intended to be used for style Parts ONLY.  As he states the Mega Voice produces variations on the instrument to create more variation in the style playback.  An example would be: A Mega Guitar part can play a strum or a picking sound, or a muted picking sound depending on the note velocities programmed into the style Part.
