Every time I find a Midi for a song, it is out of tune with the music.  How do you work out what key the Midi is in and what key the Music is in.
Stay Safe Everyone, I think we are in this mess for a while to come yet.

Janus

start the midi try to play the melodie noten
start the arranger play the melodie notes in your key
Check the notes what the different is in steps between the midi file and your key
transpose the midi file in steps you found up or down

What do you mean by "music"? Do you mean the sheet music you have? An audio file you have?

To find out the key of the midi file, turn on the score display. It will show you the key. Fir the key of the "music", it depends on what you have.

Cheers,
Fred

Beginners don't know wat key is
they have to hear the music
The differrent between the midi file melodie
and the melodie you are used to play the arranger or the score you use
count the steps between them and transpose the midifile up or down with the steps you found

thank you Janus,  Some  tend to forget there are people out there that are at the beginning of learning these things. With a manual that is next to useless when you want more detail.

Hi Marion,
to find what the original song's key (either we have a sheet music or on) we can use sites like these two:

https://chordify.net/

https://chordu.com/

To find the key of a midi file we can choose the midi song(Select) on the keyboard and press play.
Now as the midi is playing we can press the "Score"(display) button and automatically the keyboard chooses midi 1 channel to show the score for the right hand playing and midi 2 channel to show the score for the left hand playing.
If the notes that are shown on the screen don't help us to find out what the key is, we press "set up" down right on the screen ( it is the button 8 ) and then we select channel 3 for the right hand and press ok.
We continue until we can find a channel that has notes that form chords.
Usually it is a channel  that has a piano or a Classical guitar,or strings or a pad sound.
Maybe some or all of these channels are playing just chords.

You can also listen to the midi and evaluate which channel is playing chords and not the melody or a melodic part.
E.g. if a guitar that plays a strumming sound(a.... groooooum sound :) ) every beat 1 and/or 3 on a 4/4 rhythm song, then this guitar is playing the chords.
Or a long continuous sound of strings(4 beats sound) that changes at the start of every new bar.

You can also find what sound/instrument every midi plays by choosing the midi song and then pressing the button "channel on/off(SONG)".
It is down to the left side of your screen.
Mute all the 16 channels(all the buttons 1-8 under the screen) and then unmute one by one the channels to find out which are the channels that you maybe interested in to find the chords.

And finally, the first chord of a song it is usually the key of a song.
Also free midi files that we find on the internet usually are made at the original key of the song.
A sheet music sometimes is in the key that it is easier to play.

Sorry for trying to help, Marion.

If determining the key of a song is difficult, then ignore the key. What's important is the difference between the two. So try this:

— Ensure that Transpose Assign is set to Song
— Load your midi and music
— Now use the transpose button, one step at a time, until the midi matches the music.
— If the music is higher than the midi, you want to increase the transpose; if it's lower, you want to decrease

Hope this helps,
Fred

What on earth has the Yamaha manual to do with finding the key of a song?
It's a musical instrument, so there is no escaping that you need to learn about music, not just about the keyboard.

Hi Marion,

you wrote "a" (= one) Manual here. But several Manuals are available for most Yamaha keyboard models (mostly Owner's Manual, Reference Manual and Data List). Have you really downloaded all available Manuals for your keyboard?

Best regards,
Chris

● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)
