I know the S975 has more sounds but are they better sounds? I really like the S900 it just may be time to upgrade!!!
Would like a 88 key with hammer action and all the functions and great sounds of the PSR S models but this just does not exist that I know of.

Thinking of upgrading... just want to know from those of you that have upgraded what were the features that you really notice after upgrading?

If your real desire is a better keybed, why not spend the money on a good external MIDI controller keyboard?

In my view, the most significant difference from S900 to S975 is that S975 supports YEM.

S975 has Audio Styles, some new electric guitar sounds from Tyros, real strings and real drums also from Tyros, new real distortion and real reverb dsp effects, and now you can install multiple expansion packs using Yamaha expansion manager. If I remember well the S900 has not dsp on styles, and you can't install expansion packs.

Hi Roger,

I have had both the S900 and the S910, with which I gigged a LOT. I bypassed the S950 and S970 and went straight to the S975. It has neither 88 keys or the weighted feel, BUT I am pleased how much nicer the key action and bed feels than the S900/S910 boards. Kinda like getting great shocks on your car.

Are the overall instrument sounds improved?
I like the guitar sounds on the s900 BUT are they better on the S975?

Which instruments have the biggest sound improvements?

Good comment so far, THANKS.

The guitar sounds are much better on the S975! But, if I were you, I would keep my old keyboard as well. It takes some time to get used to the new sounds, and it is nice to have a backup if something happens!

Roger, the S900 has a 5-band Master EQ, whereas the S975 has an 8-band Master EQ. This allows more refining of sound, including guitars (I think boosting band 6 slightly improves guitars).

Also, the S975 speakers deliver a MUCH bigger, dynamic sound than the S900. I think the S975 makes the voices I port over from my S900/S910 USB setups sound better.

I also went from the 950 to the 975 and found the voices much improved which affected the OTS settings.  The brass and strings seem to be more affected.   The percussion drums
had more punch as well.    Cannot be definitive on the guitars, but will lean to improvement as are the other voices.

Hope this helps

Hello Roger,

You really need to move up as the S900 keyboard (now 12 yrs old) was the last Yamaha keyboard that had SFF1 style formats. Up grading to anything else including the S975 will open up HUNDREDS of additional free Yamaha SFF2 styles to you.

I use the S950 and the guitar voices are excellent which were first introduced with the S950 keyboard. The S975 will have those great sounds plus the new and improved Vocal Harmonizer (VH2).

Drake

Going to upgrade it soon as I see what's coming out this month in new keyboards from NAMM.
As it stands now will probably go with PSR S975 as soon as I determine that there are no new releases that surpass the 975.
