Vocal Harmony question

Hi,

Is it possible to make use of all the VH applications without touching any chords ?
Wishful thinking maybe ?

I would like to use all VH sounds in an audio recording.

Plse advise.

You could turn the style volume down to zero? The VH would still work based on the chord you were 'playing' but the accompaniment would be silent.

Strange, some VH settings are working without touching the chord keys but apparently not applicable for all sounds.😱

You can use VH2 without playing on the keyboard.

Via Edit, we enter the VH2 menu.

In TAB OVERVIEW we set CHORDAL mode and ScaleDiatonic as the type.
With HARMONY ASSIGN we open the lower menu and we chose the chord (KEY ROOT) and the type of ter (KEY TYPE)

In the TAB part we determine parameters for accompanying vocals (HARM.1, HARM.2, HARM.3).
DEGREE determines how many tones will deviate from the vocals of the master.
The printscreen shows that HARM.1 sings the upper (6th), HARM2 lower (-3rd), and HARM3 is unison with the main vocal.
Under VOLUME we determine the relationship between the accompanying vocals.

You could quick-record a MIDI file, which will have the chords embedded in at as XF data. When you play the file back, with the volume at zero, the VH will work using the chords in the file. As long as you sang at the same tempo you'd be fine.

Sorry, I am a  bit off topic.  I use vocal harmonizing very much.  The vocal harmony Genos incorporates is amazingly good.  I have had most all dedicated vocal harmonizers and still have the Roland V7, the Helicon and Digitech top of the line rack mount units.  Heavy and rack space consuming.   Crazy as I am I have made recordings of the same tune using the external units and the Genos internal unit hooked up to the same mic but then to different  stereo channels on a multitrack recorder carefully making sure volume and EQ settings are identical.  (Commercial comparison demos often fool you with that, for instance barely recognizable 3 dB louder always seems better) Listening to the result switching from tracks I felt Genos was the best, admittedly by a small margin  you cannot hear except by means of this very complicated comparison system.  The audience would not be able to hear it just like some other things I have been posting about  (and heavily criticised for).  But the fact that YAMAHA has been able to improve on the vocal harmonizer compared both to dedicated units and Tyros 5  is very impressive in deed.

You have to play a chord in order for the VH to know what to correctly harmonize to. Because if you don't sing spot on, the harmony will follow your OFF notes, that is why you need the chords. The VH will at least harmonize "correctly" for you.

Herewith I would like to thank CKOBU for his great instructions.

Thanks to his overview I am able to select a VH Type without touching any left hand key.

It makes Vocal recording so much easier after all instrument tracks have been recorded in my Audio DAW.

Is it possible to trigger the vocal harmony by pre-record the chords in Genos sequencer or loop recorder
or is it only possible to trigger the vocal harmony in real-time?

Yes, you can do that. If you sing along to a MIDI made on the keyboard the VH will work without you touching thevkeys. But it will not work with third party MIDIS, most likely because those are made by computer programs and not by using an arranger, but radter a MIDI controller.

Each midifile can have a chord of information that will determine the VH background vocals. The insertion process is very simple and shown in the link below.

With PSRUTI you can easily enter Chord information into your SONG. You just have to choose the XF option on Chord Source. Watch the explanation video.

Hi Jugge,
What I do with all my midi songs is record an unused track of chords for only the parts where I want the vocal harmonies to be, then before saving the recording I set the volume of this track to zero. I also set the type of harmony I want (eg. Studio Singers etc) and set the track for the harmony to use to the track number I've just recorded and finally set the VH to on before saving the recording. In this way I then get the harmonies automatically in the right places whenever I play the midi song.
