Dear forum members.
I use a Yamaha PSR-S900 myself Are there styles of Tyros 1-5 that I can buy or download somewhere that I can then load into my PSR -S900 I sometimes see styles for sale on the internet but can they be used on my S900?? I see a lot of beautiful styles to listen to on Youtube but how do I get them on my S900??

@Ireen

You probably won't get the styles from tyros 3, 4 or 5 to work in the S900, not without converting them. Style file types changed after the S900 and the S900 doesn't recognise the newer files. You need SFF1 format only.

Tyros 1 styles should work though, they use the same SFF1 format as the S900. But do try them from the link srmf provided so you can know for sure before purchasing any.

Most of the styles for the PSR3000 used to work well on my S900, have a look through them too.

I meant to add, you can get style files prepared for Tyros/S900/3000 here, for purchase.

Much easier to just download Jorgen's converter ..It allows you to take a batch of SFF2 styles and converts them to SFF1 ..I did a big batch of Tyros 4 styles for a mate here who has a S900

I never tried the converter, is it that easy? I thought they would probably need further tweaking after.

Hi Mary

Not at all ..all it does is change the format!  Just select the source folder with the SFF2 files in it and create a new folder for the SFF1 files and hit go and it a few seconds you have a set of SFF 1 files .. no editing no issues and almost instant!!

I never tried SFF2-to-SFF1 converter and so I will assume that it properly converts all necessary style elements. But that's many times not enough, because:
Converted result depends on content of SFF2 style. That is, if SFF2 style is actually using SFF2 features, then some tracks of the resulting SFF1 style will sound wrong. The problem in this case is, it's impossible to "correct" those tracks later to make them to play the right notes.

What are those SFF2 features that can't be converted to SFF1? At least two come to my mind:
1. SFF2 style track is using "Guitar mode"
2. SFF2 style track is using "note split points"
Bad news is, most of SFF2 preset styles are using those two SFF2 features -that's why Yamaha introduced SFF2.
At first we will maybe not notice that there's something wrong with style converted to SFF1, but trust me, it won't sound as it should. Usually that's more noticeable as we change chords at playing the style.

Is there a solution? Well, it's not easy and requires quite a lot of knowledge and time. I personally wouldn't bother.
Meanwhile SFF1 keyboards are 15+ years old... maybe it's time to upgrade.

Yes, I guess it's a case of some convert well, some don't, depending on what each contains. I realised the purpose of the SFF2 format, and knowing I'm not very good at tweaking, I never did try converting.

That's just what I've done, after 16 years  ;D

But you are very good at tweaking Chris, I don't have that talent.
