I have not had an issue like this before, how do I fix it? Can I try WD 40?

Hello Norman

I had an issue with my wheel. I would bend a note and release the wheel but it would not return to center every time. I took it to an authorized shop (cost $150 USD to fix it.) The issue was the center of the wheel was no longer ROUND any more. The shop ordered and replaced the old wheel and it was fine. So, if that is what your wheel is doing, then WD40 will not do anything to fix it.

Hi Norman,

I suspect you don't mean the Pitch Bend wheel mentioned by Drake, but the "Data (Entry) dial", i.e. the "wheel" in the bottom right corner of the S770 display, next to the ENTER button.

The component located under this wheel is a so-called "(Rotary) Encoder", which sends control pulses to the CPU. An Alps encoder with the number EC12E24204A2 is used here, which only costs a few euros:
>>> https://de.farnell.com/en-DE/alps/ec12e24204a2/encoder-vertical-24det-24ppr/dp/2065054

There are several possible reasons why the Data Entry dial is not working as intended. For example, it could be that an internal connector that connects the PNS board (on which the encoder is located) to the CPU has become loose. The control IC to which the encoder is connected is probably not defective, otherwise connected pedals would also no longer work.

It will definitely not help to spray anything from the outside. You should never do this.

I recommend the following first:

Download the PSR-S770 Service Manual from the following link and read the chapter "Test Program" (from page 38). Start the Test program using one of the two methods described on page 39.
>>> https://psrtutorial.com/lessons/workshops/ServiceManuals.html

As the Data Entry dial is not working, please use the TEMPO -/+ buttons to call up the Test item "031: SW, LED Check" and execute it as described on page 44 to check the function of the Data Entry dial. If the dial does not work here either, exit this Test item as described on the page mentioned and execute the Test item "83: Test Exit" to exit the Test mode.

Please come back here and post what this test revealed. If you have the necessary electronic knowledge, you could open the S770 yourself (referring to the Service Manual) and at least visually inspect whether an internal connector has come loose. However, I recommend taking the keyboard to a specialist, preferably to an authorized Yamaha service center.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Norman,

As I wrote above, please run the test item "31: SW LED Check". This also includes the check of the Date Entry dial. As mentioned, you can select the test items using the TEMPO -/+ buttons instead of the dial.

Chris

Hi Norman,

What do you mean exactly:

Can you call up the Test program and run the Test item "31: SW LED Check", but nothing happens with the mentioned data entry dial check? Or can you not call up the Test program at all?

Best regards,
Chris

I ran the test, there's nothing indicating on the screen regarding the scroll wheel. All the one buttons show its fine.
