Hello
I am a happy owner of an Yamaha SX900

I would like to upgrade now

Do you folks recommend the new SX920 or a used Genos 1

The price is nearly the same.
Let me hear your thoughts please.

Thank you

MadrasGiaguari

Dear Milletino,

I went trough the specifications of SX920 and related videos on YouTube. It's a VE RY nice arranger.

I happily own a Genos (1) from 4 years, using very intensively (3-4 hours a day....) and still discovering features, sounds, ecc.. It is so powerful that it is hard to get tired about.

So said, it is true that SX920 has been provided with many sound, styles and features og Genos1. But  Genos is IMHO another instrument. The keypad is of a very good quality and it is very pleasant to play, and has 76 keys, that often makes a big difference. The display is larger, helping to surf easier trough the many menus. The general interface is very rich, with the sliders and knobs section  that offers huge opportunities to control many parameters. So for assignable buttons, very useful. The storage capacity of Genos is huge (3 Usb ports in addition to the internal memory). And you may check many more differences by comparing the specifications of Genos1 and Sx920 on Yamaha website.

As I said, I had my Genos for 4 years, and NEVER had ANY problem. It should also be considered that
Genos OS had many updates, that makes  the arranger work in a very stable way.

I could tell you many other reasons why I believe Genos is a super-arranger. So good, that I did not  move to Genos 2.....

So, if the price the you get for Genos 1 is near to SX920, I would not have any doubt to get Genos.

The only reason I would think about SX920 is the internal audio system (speakers), if you don't want to play with external speakers or monitors.

Of course, it's my personal opinion, and hope that anyway could be a contribution to your decision.

Ciao,

Angelo

I totally agree with MadrasGiaguari. It depends on what your wishes are.
PSR is portable, built-in speakers, 61 narrow, lightweight keys.
If that's what you want, then PSR. Otherwise, by all means, GENOS. I also have a G1 from 2020 and I see no reason to want anything else right now. This instrument was built with the best wishes.

I am with the others. Genos 1 is a great keyboard. and the psrs have the size and build in speakers going for them, but have some limitations.

I agree with all the previous comments.

The new SX920 is really the true "small Genos 1", but remains in the mid-range segment.

The only reasons to go with SX920 are:
- Portability
- Bluetooth capability
- Hard buttons for Chord looper

If you don't have any of these requirements (like I do) go for Genos 1.

Hello,

I agree with Angelo's message, to which I would add:
- the After Touch,
- the 48v power supply for dynamic microphones with Combo jack (XLR/Jack),
- more than double the number of DSP inserts, 28 Genos and 13 for the x920!
- MIDI A/B on Genos ...
- 1 Usb more
- the weight difference of 3 small Kg is not a criterion of choice for me ...
- 10 registrations ...
- etc ... I'm certainly forgetting ¿¿¿

To sum up, we're not in the same range, despite the age of the Genos, and I'm keeping mine. I love the Dynamic Control of the Genos, via AccèsDirect /StartStop (present on the x920) which I use all the time and which no longer exists on the Genos2, replaced on Knobs by another almost identical function ...

All true, but people should be aware that despite being a stripped down Genos1, the PSRsx920 also
-fixes the ability to render chord step edit midi from custom styles (a feature oddly missing from G1, sx700,sx900 and A5000, but was in every other Yamaha board
-Add's Super Articulation+ to some of the existing S.Art sounds

but on the flip side, the G1 doesn't have the patch remain issue from G2, sx9720/sx720 and Korg PA5x where if you turn off a part (Right1/Right2/Right3) the sound just suddenly stops, even if you're holding sustain. All previous Yamaha's didn't have this issue (I think all previous Korg's didn't either)... this issue has basically only suddenly appeared with new arrangers after 2022!

Doesn't affect everyone: I don't sustain after turning off a sound, I keep holding the keys, so patch remain works for me even on the new Yamaha's; but it is annoying for anyone who relied on the sustain pedal to carry the sound. Oddly, the PA5x won't even patch remain when holding the keys, so I'm unable to find a workaround for this issue at all there. But if it's a big deal to you, definitely go for a G1 then!

Dear Mark,

you gave a very interesting information.
I'm so surprised about this issue of Genos2 (I still play Genos1, and will keep it since it is very reliable: in 4 years never had hardware or software malfunction ).
Are Yamaha people aware of it? Are they working to fix it?

Ciao

As a dealer I've reported it to Yamaha, but I don't think it's very high on the priority list... Korg PA5x has had this issue for over 2 years, and nobody even noticed until now. I should probably report it to Korg as well, but again... it took almost 2.5 years for anybody to even notice this...? How big a deal could it be? (again, to some people, it could be very annoying. However, I didn't even notice for 2 years)
