Hi, I'm quite new to the PSR sx 720 (weeks) and enjoying it greatly but I'm a bit confused about Expansion pack basics. There were some Expansion packs already installed on the new keyboard but when I was transferring another one from the Ap on my iPhone the keyboard warned me that I would lose all Expansion content in order to do this. I pressed OK and I did lose all the preinstalled Expansions. Is this just the way it is - you can only have the pack/s that you download at any one time on your keyboard (losing already installed ones)? Can they be copied and moved to 'User'? Any help greatly appreciated thanks.

While you can only load one Expansion Pack at a time, you can combine multiple Expansion Packs into a new Expansion Pack. This allows you to have multiple packs in your instrument at the same time.

To combine multiple packs, you need the Expansion Manager, which you can download for free from Yamaha. The Expansion Manager has a reputation for not being particularly self-explanatory, but there is also a PDF manual for it.

Expansion Packs can't be copied and moved to 'User'.

Oh right. But if I was to use a style out of the pack and make a Registration file could it be saved this way even though the original pack might have gone?

You can save a style from an expansion pack to User or USB, just like you can save a copy of a preset style.

You just can't save an entire expansion pack to User or USB drive, especially not the expansion pack's voices. This can be a problem, because styles from an expansion pack often (but not always) use voices from 'their' expansion pack. In this case, you'll need to revoice the copied style so it works without the loaded expansion pack.

You would have to save a new copy of the style - the registration just "points" to the style, wherever it is on USB, User, expansion memory, etc

Similarly, the style just "points" to its voices - with the difference that the wave samples used in custom voices in an expansion pack can only be stored in the expansion memory. So to make them work you either need to have the expansion pack partially loaded (via YEM) or use a substitute.

Right. Interesting. So the thing to do is experiment with different expansion packs and then keep going back to the Expansion pack manager and loading particular favourite styles and voices only - not the whole packs. I wonder what the memory is for Expansions...
