Genos2 New Firmware Version 1.2

  • Changed the behavior so that even if you turn off some of the Left Part and Right 1-3 Parts while Sustain is on, the notes that are already sounding on those Parts will be maintained until Sustain is released (turned off).
  • Added a setting item "Slider Mode" (Catch/Jump) that allows you to change the response method of the LIVE CONTROL sliders, on the display called up via [MENU] -> [Live Control] -> [Menu].
  • With this setting, you can now switch between the standard slider response of Genos2 (Catch) and a response where the value changes immediately when you move the sliders (Jump; the same as on Genos).
  • Changed the behavior as to whetheror not pitch bend affects the Harmony (Vocoder) sound of Vocal Harmony so that it is the same as on Genos. Operating the pitch bend now affects the Vocoder sound.
  • V1.04 to V1.10

I am disappointed that they still do not allow style dynamics control to be saved in a registration as one can do with other live controls.

Enjoy

I totally agree with the disappointment. I've mailed Yamaha one month after the Genos 2 release about the dynamics control problem, not saving it into the registration successfully. I even demonstrated it to Peter Baartmans and he also agreed that this is not correct and promised to communicate this with Yamaha.

I've given up and stopped concerning about this. Yamaha is not listening (and I don't believe it anymore they will do in the future). It also looks like they don't want to be innovative. My Genos 2 memory is full and I'm stuck on investing in new packs or voices. Normally I'm saying that I will certainly upgrade to any newer model when it will be released (from Tyros 3 to Genos 2). At this moment I doubt it very much.

So...this weekend I have planned to pick up and buy a new Ketron EVM module to expand my music equipment and to fulfill my need to discover new things and functions and enjoy the real audiostyles from the Ketron. And from what I've seen and read, Ketron is a lot further in using computer techniques and updating their OS software. Even read something about plans for AI chord progression. That's what I like to see and like to look out for more new functionality in the future.

PS: Really happy with the Slider Mode....it was really a pain in the *** for me, changing the sliders to the top before working. Took way too long to add this feature.

I also completely agree, especially in general and not Genos 2 specifically. It seems to be a trend within all brands that there are fewer and fewer updates. In addition, I have the feeling that each new generation of keyboards differs less and less from the previous one. Less and less innovation.

I hope that Yamaha (continues to) listen to the consumer. There is always enough to innovate. There are consumers who can buy a keyboard every year, but also those who can only do so once every ten years. How nice would it be if consumers were occasionally spoiled with an extension such as new styles and small improvements.

A small example. Korg Pa5X has been on the market for a few years now. Completely new operating system and therefore fewer features than its predecessor. Consumers complained bitterly and Korg did not seem to listen or respond. However, now they have woken up and update 1.4 will be released soon with huge improvements and new features. So it is possible. Ketron also proves that it is possible.

Yamaha keyboards are very nice devices but please why with so little storage in 2024/2025

Yamaha is a very big and heavy company. I'm sure they are working on a lot of AI subjects. They have clear product management with roadmaps and associated resources. The features for the next Genos are already defined. Arrangers should not be a critical target for their strategy. Nevertheless I'm quite sure every 4 years we will see  a new keyboard model that is a « not enough big » evolution of the previous one, that doesn't include the latest IT progress, but that a lot of people (relatively) will buy. Ketron is smaller a company, more dynamic but with less power. Cycles could be shorter for Ketron

I think that if you want more than what's currently offered by Yamaha, then it's sensible to buy something from another manufacturer in addition to the Yamaha. Then you get the best of all worlds.

Big company can have more developers. What they released recently can be programmed in two weeks. I think they have small teams working on different things or the firmware update was developed this year. Ketron is a small company and innovate faster than Yamaha. Where can I find Yamahas roadmaps that are so clear? Like to read them. Development time are in, I think, sound and style creation and the totally new features not small updates

I absolutely don't think real time multithreaded application with direct access to hardware DSP are developed like a small web application. Imagine the number of parameters that must be applied on all sounds in real time, with perfect syncrhonization, when you press a single keyboard note, and you change your chord.

And I don't think there are a lot of developers specifically dedicated to firmware of Yamaha arrangers.

Roadmaps are secret. And be sure the features of the successor are already fully defined. Modifying hardware assembly lines is not something as easy as a distributing a software patch.

@Robbidoes in Genos2 there are several things that need adjustment, everyone can report that via "ideascale.com" but there are so many things asked there that I think people can't see the forest for the trees!! There are a number of people who report useful things, but a lot that has little to no use. I wish you success with the purchase of a much too expensive Ketron EVM module that will most likely be for sale again within a few months on "marktplaats.nl" Ketron is still 10 years back in time with the interface and sounds that you can also find in the SD1000 module that currently costs €450! The audiostyle is a technology that Wersi had already released with OAS in 2002 and had discontinued 4 years later because it was totally useless and cannot be edited!! Almost all Ketron Events that have already been purchased have been resold within 3 months! As for the memory, both Yamaha and Korg Pa5x have 4gb flash memory, with korg pa5x it is possible to compress to 8gb but with loss of quality. Almost all Genos owners make the stupid mistake of loading all the free expansion packs that Yamaha makes available into the memory so the memory is already full, also there are paid packs for sale that are immensely large, they are made by people who want to make money quickly but know little or nothing to first edit the wavefills to make them smaller which of course is a big job!!! I know what I'm talking about.
PS: an interesting tip, if you really want even better sounds than Yamaha Genos2 use good VST instruments.
And furthermore it is mainly the man behind the keys that makes the difference and the keyboard only for a small part!

If you are a Yamaha decision maker you could allocate development resources to fixing some things that most buyers didn't even notice. Which will make a very small number of people a little happier for a very short time but make no money for Yamaha. Or you can allocate them to developing a constant supply of new  products to compete for new buyers which are the lifeblood of the company and hopefully make many millions of dollars.
Is what happens any surprise  ;)

You're maybe right Mike, but then again - if you disappoint a lot of your loyal users, maybe they switch  to other brands. Genos2 is my 11th. keyboard fra Yamaha, always preordered them before release-date and before that 3 organs). This time I'm very disappointed - especially about the useless Dynamic-control. So much that I find myself less interested in playing with the keyboard. I seriously think Ketron Event could be my next keyboard. At least I won't preorder the Genos2, no matter how much Yamaha tell us haw exiting it is. Now I know you can't trust them!

Well its your money, and so your prerogative to change brands. If you are unhappy of course you should try something else. But Genos only has two serious competitors, and if you look at other forums the advanced users of the other two keyboards also have 'issues' with perceived shortcomings of those brands. All of them are good keyboards, but none of them meet every requirement by everybody. They all have pros and cons, but to be fair, they are all excellent keyboards in their own way. And its a balance - do you change brands with all the re-learning because there is one thing that irritates you, only to discover a different irritant on the next keyboard.

Hi Flemming.

Personally, I own both G2 (for 3 days) and PA5X. Both of them have pros and cons, so don't think that one is better than the other. Both are better in their way. BTW, as I already wrote, I have my G2 for 3 days and I've already discover some issues with it, one of them I've already post it here on forum, about Assembly function. But, I wanted so much the Section Time Signature for Genos 1, as now having it on Genos 2, I can bypass this issue by using the PC software to be able to achieve what I want. Is better that at least it can play different time signatures 😁
With PA5X, till last update, it was a problem as well with time signature and length for the variations and fills. Now it was solved with latest update of 1.3.1 but still has some other issues, I don't want to talk about them here.

Moving to Ketron Event, you must have it and try to play with it, and familiarize with the operating of it, because it is another horse. If at this time Korg (PA5X) and Yamaha seems to have so many similarities in menus, and even on the phisical buttons or display layout, Event is other thing, even playing fills is different than Korg or Yamaha, for me at least is annoying. You must think verry carefully if you want to leave what you have now for the new operation.

Best regards,
Vali

100% this  ;D

Vali, I already replied to you; you actually don't need to copy and paste from endings and intros; G2 now has 1 measure,2,3 up to 31 measure (4/4) breaks!

I reply to you, as well, Mark.
There was a conversion there, from 4/4 Break to 6/4 Break (⚠️ not Fills, but Break), with some moving midi data (insertion in middle of 6/4)... This means was not only a simple extension of the break from 4/4 to 8/4. Even so, if there is any midi data into an existing style part, when you convert the time signature all events are deleted. The keyboard does not know to copy or to delete midi events. It could be done automatically by the keyboard, but they did not extended the feature to this kind of "hard work" 😂
