As someone who went to classes to learn ballroom dancing I can honestly say that the choice of music used in those classes was very traditional. Sometimes we need to "think outside the box" as to songs whose time signature may be suitable for a particular form of dance .

In the UK a TV series "Strictly Come Dancing" was/is extrememly popular. I don't have a TV so can't say much about the music but I can guarantee there would have been a wide choice of songs used to keep the interest of the audience and the contestants.

The song title is not the key when playing for ballroom dancers. Tempo is. Find the right tempo, and don't change it while playing the song. If you have a singer, have them stay on the beat.

Just Google ballroom dancers tempos to find what you need.

As a hobby dancer, I can only agree with Fred. For dancers, it's very important that the songs / rhythms are played at the correct dance tempo. Unfortunately, this is often not the case and can make a song undanceable.

Here's a page by Heidrun Dolde that lists the tempos commonly used in German dance schools and dance competitions (scroll all the way to the end):

Hi there, I hope we helped you. Here's some more background and a further list of songs.

"Ballroom dancing" can cover a wide range of dances, from the American and International Foxtrot to the West Coast Swing. The activity itself can be at three levels, Beginner, Social and Competition. As had been already noted by Fred and Kurt, tempo and maintaining that tempo is very important for musicians in providing the accompaniment.  In a dance school environment, it is likely that different tempos will be used for the same dance for beginners, older dancers and those dancers aiming to achieve certification or to compete.

I don't know the complete range of Yamaha keyboards but picking a Ballroom Style with a pre-set tempo in Beats Per Minute (BPM) and sticking with it is very  straightforward.  On the two Yamaha keyboards I own there is a 'Tap tempo' function for greater control and to respond to instructions from the dance teacher. The ballroom styles of that keyboard will have the appropriate tempo in BPM set by Yamaha for each dance. For, example on my Genos 2 there are 40 Ballroom styles with the tempo shown.  But they can easily be changed . Here are some examples: Walz 100; Slow Walz 90;English Walz 87;Quickstep; Jive1 172;Beguine 113;Cha Cha 124; Tango 136; Foxtrot 117.

here's an extended list of tempos for each dance with information sources including, among others, the American Dance Association. What you will notice is that in some cases the tempo for the American version of the dance and the International version are different, and in other cases, the same. The list also uses the words "recommended tempo" and there is a range of BPM. For example, the American Foxtrot recommended tempo is 120 -136 BPM while the International is 112-120 BPM.

The format of the BBC's  Strictly Come Dancing pro/celebrity competition, known simply as Strictly has been sold to over 50 countries on five continents. "It's called Dancing with the Stars in Australia and the US and, Let's Dance in Germany and Sweden, Bailando por un SueƱo in Argentina and Colombia, and Parahandes in Armenia, just to name a few."

Here's a varied and long list of songs from the UK 2024 shows from Week 1 to the Semi-Finals and Finals.

Only the song titles and artists are shown so you will need to do further research for the BPM.

If you like Bossa Nova, one of my favourite albums is Brazilian rock singer Rita Lee's Bossa n' Beatles with songs in English and Portuguese. So many favourites but, "With a little Help From My Friends" is lovely.
