Hello everyone,

I have a PSR S500 and I want to connect it with the expander Roland JV1010. I don't know how connect them since the PSR S500 has only USB B port and the JV1010 has Midi in/out.
Do you have any suggestions for the connection?
May be a USB A-Midi câble (out to in) and using a connector USB A to USB B ? I tried this but nothing happened, I don't know if the issue comes from the USB-Midi câble but I am not sure that this works like that.

Thanks

No unfortunately it doesn't.

Now, in theory a B to B cable *might* work, but few models are designed to work that way; we tried a P125b with a PSRsx900, no go (but it *did* work with a PXS1000 and his PSRsx900!)

Your situation is exacerbated further by the JV1010 being so old, there was no midi usb out.

Ideally, you'll probably need something from Midisolutions or something similar; like a hardware box that has a 5 pin midi conversion to USB B (all the ones that are to USB A, will *not* work, that's for plugging into a PC)

Having said that, you should be able to plug both of them *into* a PC, and possibly find some way for them to communicate that way?

You might be able to connect both devices to your computer and then transfer data that way, but a direct connection between devices is going to be problematic. For the old device that does not have USB, you will either need a USB to MIDI converter cable or an audio interface that has MIDI connections.

Hi Randru,

To connect a keyboard that only has USB-MIDI (USB B "To Host" terminal) directly to a device with DIN MIDI In/Out terminals, you need an additional, so-called "USB MIDI Host" box. The following link takes you to a post (from July 17, 2023) on this topic:

Please also click on the link there, which takes you to pictures and a description of the "USB MIDI Host" device from "MidiTech".

One problem could be that the PSR-S500 does not yet have a configurable MIDI Setup, as is known from newer PSR-S models as well as PSR-SX, Tyros and Genos models. This means that you cannot, for example, set the MIDI Output channels on which the keyboard parts are transmitted on the S500. I suspect that if the setting "Function > MIDI > Keyboard Out > ON" is used on the S500, the keyboard data is transmitted via MIDI Ch 1 (Main Voice), Ch 2 (Dual Voice) and Ch 3 (Split Voice). The target MIDI device (in your case the Roland JV1010) should therefore offer the option of setting/adjusting the MIDI Input channel(s) used.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hello everyone,
Thanks a lot for these answers and the resolution. I will go that way, I understand that this is the solution of the problem.
Many thanks  :D

Hi Randru,

I remember having problems with MIDI and my PSR-S500 (long ago). Since these MIDI USB HOST devices aren't cheap, it might be good if you had a return policy if possible. Just a thought.
