Sorry just another question.

On the Part select buttons can you get it to set to say R1, R2 and R3 by default when you load a style ..Often I will use the Music Finder and it defaults to OTS 1 which is Concert Piano normally and I find that R2 and R3 are off so the level of the melody is very low with just a soft instrument only and you cannot hear it over the style and then when you change say to OTS2 it's super loud cos you had to turn the right hand up to hear it?? EDIT:  I now see that if you use the music finder it automatically decides what parts will be on and which will be off ....do different styles do the same thing or do you have manual control??

hello Chris,
Maybe I understood your question wrong...
The voices that are assigned to Left, Right1, Right2 and Right3 are stored in OTS 1-4 settings of particular style. Means, if you wish for appropriate Left, Right1, Right2 and Right3 voice to be automatically selected (for each Style variation), then you need to turn on OTS LINK button (on left side of the panel).

Yep that's what I figured. So if the style only has say Right1 assigned to OTS1 and starts at Variation 1 then the keyboard will only turn on Right1's part??  Will the Style still do that if OTS link is turned off. I have seen Styles in Jorgen's OTS Editor that have voices assigned to OTS 1 -4 but only Right 1 check box is on.  If one leaves the assignment as it stands then I guess you would have to manually select R2 and 3 and also manually turn that part on?  Would that also apply to Left ?

hi Chris,
Your thinking is correct!

...Will the Style still do that if OTS link is turned off.
No. In this case all voices (L,R1,R2,R3) will remain unchanged, no matter what Variation you select. However, the voices will change if you press one of OTS [1-4] buttons.
If OTS button [1-4] is defined (light on) then that OTS button has all four voices (L,R1,R2,R3) defined. At the same time it's also defined which of those voices (L,R1,R2,R3) is actually used (activated).

Of course, you can change voices for each OTS button and activate only those that you wish. For example:
1. change the voice of L and R1
2. activate (turn on) voice L and R1
3. save new voice sets into desired OTS button -for example into OTS2 (Reference Manual, p.39).

Now every time when you open that style and turn OTS LINK on, your OTS2 voices will be selected when you switch to Main B variation (or if you press OTS2 button manually).

And before someone jumps with an idea to "simply use registrations": registrations is not a substitute for OTS settings!

Thanks so much for that information. On my current songstyles I have been using Jorgen's OTS Editor Software ..it never seemed to work on my old S650 but it seems to work well on the T4 (probably cos the styles I'm editing were made on the T2 !)  If I load a style then the OTS buttons will indicate which OTS voice has been activated and that works well If I load a style into Jorgen's Editor it basically shows each of the 4 channels with voices and whether they are active or not ..plus you can select voices to replace the default ones and save the file that's on the USB.

If I do the same scenario on the keyboard and load a style from the USB and then activate voices that are "greyed out" OR change existing voices I can only save the modified file back to the user section ?? Using the editor I can overwrite the existing file but the only disadvantage with using the OTS Editor is I cannot test a new to see what a new voice sounds like so I have to play around with voices, make a note of them and then add them via the OTS editor.  I don't see any way on the T4 so change/and or/activate voices and save back to HD1 or the usb.

When you save OTS then you're asked into which style you wish to save your OTS settings. Usually that's the style that is currently selected on keyboard -and that style can be either in User section or on USB stick.

Keep in mind, that only one of four OTS buttons is saved at a time (the one that you choose) -other three OTS settings remain unchanged.
Each OTS [1-4] not only contains which voice you wish to be automatically loaded and activated.. it also contains custom settings for each voice (L,R1,R2,R3) that you have maybe made by using Voice Edit.

Yes, I know what you mean.
And that's why I use PC software only when/where absolutely necessary. Being at that, I see no need to use additional software for editing OTS. The only reason I see for that is, if I would wish to completely delete one or more OTS buttons -because that cannot be done on keyboard as far I know.

According to the Reference Manual to change OTS settings you select the new voice you want on say OTS1 and then hold down the memory button and push the OTS 1 button ..The keyboard then asks if you want to save the new OTS and you only have a yes and no option and if you press yes  it asks for a new name and brings up ONLY the user section to save it in ...there is no option to move to the HD1 or USB to save it.    That's why I was using Jorgen's OTS editor cos I can enable or disable each L, R1,R2 and R3 just by selecting the check box on each OTS ..then I can select any of the T4 voices if I need to replace the voice  and then I can save to either my computer HDD or overwrite the USB the old style was on. You can also add Harmony etc etc too   I'm not sure where you find your editor on your keyboard for changing OTS but it would be easier to change each OTS on the keyboard and save either to HD1 or a USB

hello Chris,
I'm not familiar with Tyros4 workflow, but I assume that the process is similar as on recent Yamaha arrangers. For example:

You currently have a style loaded which is in User memory and you activate OTS LINK. Depending on what variation is currently selected (Main A...Main C), related voices (stored in OTS1...OTS4) are automatically loaded and activated (for example, if you switch to variation D, then voices stored in OTS3 will be loaded).
Let's say you wish to change R1 voice in OTS2 (which will be used for variation Main B and you also wish to disable all other (L,R2,R3) voices:
1. press OTS2 to load current voices stored in OTS2.
2. change R1 voice and activate it
3. deactivate L,R2,R3 voice
4. press MEMORY button and after that you press OTS2 button (that's where you wish to store your voices configuration)
5. you'll be asked where you wish to save your (OTS) settings. Because your currently opened style is in User memory, the User memory will be opened by default -here you can select USB (if USB stick is inserted).
6. confirm
7. now you'll need to define style name into which you wish to save your OTS2 settings. This can be existing style (that's currently open) or you can define new style name, which will make a copy of your current style with new OTS2 settings.

I don't know.. maybe all above looks complicated, but the whole process takes about 5 seconds.

Yeah the procedure is much the same but using your example when you press memory and OTS2 the screen comes up and asks you if you want to save and your only options seem to be yes or no ..and it automatically shows the user screen with no option to use the tab buttons (that the normal way to select preset/user/HD or USB) so the only place you can save it is the user section. My S650 was also the same.

Not to worry ..I will use Jorgen's OTS Editor as it works really well and can save to any destination on the computer overwrite the style name you have just loaded!!  OTS Editor also allows you to enable/disable harmony/echo and select the effect plus a whole lot more.  At the moment I'm reading the styles off the USB anyway so it's no real problem apart from deciphering some voice names so I can test them on the keyboard ...(took me a while to discover that Stage EP was actually Stage Electric Piano!)

All your explanations are much appreciated!!

On my PSR-S900 you can only use the TAB keys before pressing SAVE.

So the order in your example must be:

[MEMORY]
[OTS2]
[YES]
[TAB] to USB
[SAVE]
Enter file name
[OK]

I suspect it's the same on the Tyros4.

Thanks Guys

Not sure what I was doing wrong but before it was defaulting to User and pressing the Tab button did nothing ..Now if I load a style off a USB and change the voice and then press memory and lets say OTS 1 ..it prompts me to save it and after pressing "Yes" Although it defaults to User the Tab button will shift to both HD1 or the USB and I can write it back to the USB, even to a different folder!!    Just for interest if I do as above and decide to change the voice on lets say OTS2 has it saved all 4 setups because the moment you press any OTS button after pressing memory to goes to the save dialog?

Thanks again

Hello ChrisH, I wrote a topic on playing by styles. Set up a style that you want,ie Waltz. Put the voices you want into R1, R2, R3 and then SAVE that to OTS1 then save the style with the NAME of the SONG you want. Do the same with OTS2, 3 & 4.
You now have a "song named style" with all the OTS buttons to your liking.
As you go along you will have a library of "style song names". Save to User or to USB stick. Advantage of this is that you don't lose the link between the style and your voice setup as you can when making a registration.
Easy now, just press the style button, select your song and you are away. Very similar to making a registration.
It all works by magic.  ;)
Regards, Denn.

So if you do it on the keyboard and assign a new voice to OTS1 one and save it ..do you go back and do OTS 2 and save it again until all 4 OTS voices are done ??

If I use the OTS Editor I simply decide which voices to turn on when the style loads and whether I need to change voices or volumes etc etc then I save the style's new settings by overwriting the same file I loaded.

You don't have to save the style after every change. You can also choose NO when asked YES/NO, make further changes and only save after the last change. But if you do it this way, you must not accidentally select another style or turn off the keyboard. Otherwise, all changes will be lost.

ChrisH

Aha! thanks ..that makes sense so allocate the first 3 OTS buttons and don't save by pressing "no" each time and them after the 4th OTS say "yes" and save all 4

Got it thanks!!
