I have been dreaming of a Genos for years.  The announcement of the Genos2 pushed me over the edge.  Thanks to the members who frequent this board.  The information here has given me a great start.

Kind regards,

Mike

Congrats Mike, it is most certainly a great keyboard. No doubt it was worth the wait  :)

Congratulations!

Ah, I was wondering about how big USB sticks it would accept. I wanted to put a 256gb but ended up putting a 128gb instead out of precaution. Not going through the palaver of unplugging it all again, I am sure 128gb will do for what I use it for.

I just downloaded a document from the Yamaha website which lists the 'approved' usb's for Genos 2,

https//uk.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/2177284/en-Genos2.pdf

I then looked on Amazon and found those that were available and ordered a couple. A 256Gb usb cost £20 so it's not going to break the bank!  ;D

Thanks Terry. Yeah they are very cheap now, I also have 512gb sticks as well but I won't use those as I got them for something else. As long as these things are reliable then it don't matter what type of storage is inside the G2.

I picked it up today. What a fantastic sound. I was already happy with my PSR-SX900, but this is a giant step forward. I certainly won't be bored in the coming weeks.

Congrats !  But how did you manage to even get the most recent version "Genos 3"? I am a bit jealous.    ;)

I am also very happy with the sound, I "just" need to modify all my registrations. But it is worth to do it, although I'd rather like to play instead...

Best,
Sven

You can get Genos 3 from Back to the Future Keyboards Inc.  ;D

I just hope they keep the G3 music rest brackets the same as the ones for G2.

Don't worry, I think they will keep everything the same again lol

Be ware the USB Stick has to be formatted FAT32 otherwise it will not work.
Even the FAT32 part of my Samsung T5 SSD works fine.

Wim

Yes that's why its best to format the USB directly on the Genos2 as it will set it at FAT32 regardless of the storage size, whereas on a laptop you'd need additional software to format it at FAT32 if the stick is higher than 32gb.

Michael Trigoboff

If the USB drive is bigger than 32 GB, you are wasting both money and storage. The maximum drive size for FAT32 is 32 GB, and that is all that you will get, regardless of the actual size of your USB drive.

As far as I know, it's the individual filesize stored that cannot be bigger than 4GB when format in FAT32.
I have 64GB sticks and also a 512GB SD card formatted in FAT32 to use at my Pa5X, and you can format even bigger media in same format.
If use Windows, you may get use of additional software to fulfill the format task.

Indeed. I just formatted a 64GB USB stick with the Genos2 and it formats just fine. I have all the space on the thumb drive available to the keyboard.

Format Large USB Drives with FAT32 by Using PowerShell

You can format USB drives larger than 32GB with FAT32 by using the format command in Teriminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt — the command uses the same syntax in both tools. The downside to doing this is that it can take a long time. Formatting our 64GB USB drive took about 40 minutesr, and we've heard some people complain that it can take many hours for bigger drives. Aside from the length of time, you also won't know if formatting failed — unlikely but possible — until the process is done.

Otherwise a new format is available and it is called SLIM32 ;D

Or you may want a PERFECT10 ::) ;D

Yes, with FAT32, much larger volume sizes are possible than the 32 GB "supported" by the Windows shell disk format tool.

With a sector size of 512 bytes, volumes of up to 2 TB (terabytes) are possible, and with a sector size of 4,096 bytes even volumes of up to 16 TB. These can be created e.g. with the Windows command prompt, Windows PowerShell or third-party tools, or by formatting the volume on a non-Windows system:
>>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table#FAT32

Genos2 officially supports USB sticks up to 256 GB. I suspect that 512 GB wouldn't be a problem either. But my largest USB sticks at the moment are 128 GB ones. ;)

By the way, the best, safest and the easiest is to format USB sticks directly on the keyboard (for Genos and SX models in "Menu > Utility > Storage"). You should just be careful not to accidentally format the internal User drive ...  ;) )

Chris

Yes, thats the hard way if 'deepformat', but it's several tools, also free ones, to find at the web that format in seconds.

That's the format I should use at myself. TWICE!  8) ;D ;D ;D

Yes, using the "Quick Format" method is sufficient. The keyboard also uses such a time-saving formatting method.

You can also use Quick Format in the Windows command prompt (with the "/Q" option after the "format" command). Windows PowerShell even uses Quick Format by default:

Hello!

This topic seems beat to death. I don't understand why anyone is so reluctant to just format the stick directly on the Genos. That's how I did it. It is also the "recommended by Yamaha" advice. Enough said.  -charley

Sorry for the erroneous information. I was remembering something that was true about standard Windows drive formatting, not about FAT32 in general. I am glad there were a number of people around to quickly correct what I posted.

That's what I understood, too. That's why when you have files *larger* than 4GB I switch to NTFS, which of course, doesn't work on my keyboards

I have a 256GB for all my work keyboards (except sx600 and DGX670, which require a lower current draw)
