Strange things happen when using G1 registrations

I have a lot of registrations from my Genos 1 and imported everything as suggested by Yamaha using USB drive mode.

During my performances I am using a switch pedal to switch between the regs (registration sequence). My registrations often use professional custom styles from d-o-o in Germany (they are producing very nice styles). Firmware v1.02.

I have now seen some weird things when switching between the registrations:

  • I often keep the sustain pedal pressed when switching between regs to have a smooth sound transition. Now with G2 the sound cuts when switching to the next reg even if sustain pedal was pressed before. Also when I select the reg manually the pressed sustain pedal is ignored and the sound is cut in both cases (because the G2 "thinks" that the sustain pedal has been released which was not the case because it is still pressed).

The only workaround I found so far is to load and re-save the old registrations sets memory by memory (1 .. 10) manually and then save it to disk again. After that the sustain pedal is no longer reset when a new reg is selected.

I see this more often with older registrations I probably created under odler firmware versions on G1 (maybe before v2.x). But to save each registration (1 .. 10) again is really annoying.

  • Also, I often use an assignable button (mostly button F) to fade out my songs. Now with all imported regs when I press assignable button F the song stops immediately. I can see in the setup that the button is assigned to "fade in/out" but the timeout value is set to 0.0s. Also very annoying since I now have to edit my regs manually to re-enable fade outs.

  • The volume ratios between the channels is also a thing I have to adjust literally for almost every reg.

  • I am using Vocal Harmony for quite a lot on my songs. This is also not imported correctly. I have to open VH setting and manually load the mic effect bank and re-save the registration.

I anyone has ideas how to prevent me from editing all my registrations manually I would be very grateful.

I am really baffled that Yamaha did not manage the import of G1 registrations correctly. Now after only 2 hours of trying and fiddling I already encountered the above 4 problems. The sound of G2 is very good, no question. But the backward compatibility should be preserved for us loyal Yamaha clients. I am glad that I do not make a living from the G2.

Dear Sh,

I anticipate that a substantial portion of your registrations may require reconfiguration and saving. Users exclusively utilizing factory resources with no custom editing may experience minimal, if any, need for reconfigurations.

Personally, I face challenges with over 90% of my registrations, as they are comprised entirely of custom resources and entail numerous adjustments and tweaks saved in the registrations.
These configurations may not be entirely compatible with G2. After reworking them directly on G2, some of them sound the same, but many much better on G2 (new effects etc)!

I encourage you to take your time and approach the reconfiguration process methodically.

Best regards

Dear Akki,

Thank you for your suggestions.

Yes, I guess I have to go through this painful process. But I still don't understand why the sustain pedal or the assigned fadeout settings should make this necessary. For a TOTL arranger backward compatibility should be the number 1 goal for the software developers in my opinion.

BTW, I have read somewhere that the style dynamics control should also be usable in custom styles. But I can't see this knob on my G2. Am I missing something?

Best regards,
Sven

I am just thinking out loud here, about pedal, check if it is connected to the right input, and configured properly.

About dynamic control, go Menu/Live Control and pick any unused (your preference) knob, ex Knob 6.
Click on it in Category chose Style, and Dynamic control should be there.

p.s. I use lots of Dynamic Control in Drum Edit for my custom styles, great tool!

Many thanks Akki for the style dynamics hint. Will try it tomorrow.

Of course the pedals are properly connected and configured, I can play live /wo problems. Really looks like a software incompatibility issue to me.

You are welcome.
I cannot confirm that as i don't use those pedals, only Volume/Expression, and all is ok.
If somebody else can confirm what you are experiancing we can update my Thread as well: https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,68092.0.html

Yes, I hope that others can confirm that.
I have never reported any bugs to Yamaha and I don't know if they would be interested in fixing these problems.

sh,

Everything you mention is quite common when upgrading. Sped the time get them tweaked to where you want them and you will be in good shape for a long time!

The joys of upgrading anything, there are always differences and a few headaches, but all are fixable with some effort.

Certain new features we now have on Genos2 were not on Genos1 so your registrations could not have saved them. For example Fade IN/OUT has now been assigned to Button2 on the three extra buttons we have on the left above the Articulated Buttons. You can of course re-assign it to button F if you want to. Make sure you have the boxes ticked in Memory for things you want to save along with these registrations like Assignable buttons and Live control.

Thank you EileenL.

Certainly I can do everything which you guys recommended to me and *have* to do it since I don't expect that Yamaha will fix these issues on short term. I understand that my workflow might not be the most common one.

However, f.ex for the Fade IN/OUT I don't agree because I have saved this setting into all my registrations on Genos 1 on purpose. I see no reason why this shouldn't be handled correctly on Genos 2. At least the switch from predecessor should be as hassle free as possible for a TOTL arranger. I am also working in the software industry and I am sure that it is no rocket science to preserve the maximum possible backward compatibility for customers.

This is not meant as a rant in general, I really like the Genos 2 and the enhanced sound. But I'd rather like to play instead of fiddling with all these settings. After all I am a hobbie musician and have only limited spare time.  :)

Best regards and happy playing,
Sven

I must admit that I have not had a lot of trouble with my registrations.
I backed up my User section on Genos 1 by linking my keyboard to my computer and copying all my content to my Hard Drive. I then formatted a new USB on my Genos2 and put this into my computer and copied the content back onto the USB. All my pedal settings worked fine and so did my live control settings. When you do it this way less is disturbed and links don't get broken.

Hi Eileen,

This is exactly what I did as well.
