Hi --

I'm still getting my head around some of the new capabilities in Genos2. I'm curious about how Yamaha implemented Ambient Drums, for example.

Ambient Drums first appeared in the Yamaha DTX-PRO percussion modules (roughly 2022). The DTX Ambient Drums were adopted for Genos2. Here are two videos demonstrating Ambient Drums and DTX kit editing:

You probably want a 'technically' better response, but I'm just trying to explain it rationally (for myself). Yamaha (not without reason) bought Steinberg's Cubase at the time. Two birds with one stone. When you hear the amazing sounds that come out of my dated computer when I use Cubase...wow. This is controlled by the software (plug-in) and the various graphic buttons/sliders to control everything.
You can also do this control via external controllers. And that is build in a Genos2!? ;)
Why they don't call Ambience a'reverb' (which it actually is?) is a mystery to me. But probably they wanted to emphasize its exclusivity? ;)

What I want to point out: the new 'reverbs/dynamics/ambience' are software adjustments (kind of plugins), which in itself is nothing wrong with it. Yamaha can continue with this for a long time if you see the possibilities in Cubase.  ;)
My best regards,

Hi Ton --

Thanks for responding!

These guys (Yamaha) claim to use samples that capture the room ambience. Could they be using impulse response? Mentally, I haven't been able to reconcile dry samples mixed with wet samples in the AWM2 synthesis architecture, without gobbling up more hardware-level voice elements.

I'll take another look at the percussion modules looking for clues.

Tried substituting Ambi drums with similar Revo kits on Genos1. Got decent results without a lot of work! Of course, I ain't got any ambience...  ;)

Take care -- pj
