I want to know if I should use Unbalanced or Balanced Cables for my speakers on Genos 2, I am currently using unbalanced as recommended by Chris (Overover) on my T5

Unless someone knows 100% otherwise, the Line Outs of the Genos 2 appear to be unbalanced from the specs and the images of the rear panel and you would connect with an 'unbalanced' cable even if your speakers have balanced ins. Most manufacturers would note in the specs if a connection point was unbalanced or balanced and it likely would be indicated adjacent to the connector on the panel.

Yes, on the Genos2 (just like on the Genos(1) and all Tyros models) the LINE OUT jacks are UNBALANCED. This means you have to use "standard mono phone plugs" (6.3 mm TS plugs), also for connecting to balanced inputs.

Balanced cables (with TRS plugs) should NOT be used here. The reason is that the RING contact in the output jacks of the keyboard is not connected. This means that if a balanced input is used, it will not receive a negative phase signal and there could also be noise.

The unbalanced cables used should not be longer than necessary. With longer cable lengths, interference noise can occur (e.g. due to hum interference if the audio cables are laid close to power cables/power adapters). If longer cables are necessary (e.g. on stage use) and the external mixer/active speakers have balanced inputs , I recommend using a Stereo DI box. This is connected to the keyboard with the shortest possible unbalanced cables, and balanced cables (XLR) are used from the DI box to the mixer/active speakers.

By the way, I use the active Stereo DI box "Palmer PAN 04A" and love its very good sound. :)

Best regards,
Chris

Chris

I understood that you CAN you balanced cables on a keyboard with unbalanced outputs.

To connect the Genos to balanced inputs on the external mixer/active speakers (XLR input or balanced TRS jack), I strongly advise against using balanced cables (TRS > XLR or TRS > TRS). As described above, unbalanced cables should definitely be used here (TS > TS or TS/TRS > XLR with pins 1 and 3 bridged).

To connect the keyboard to unbalanced inputs, you could also use balanced cables (TRS > TRS) if no unbalanced cables (TS > TS) are available.
