How do [the HS7s] sound without the subwoofer ?

They sound good. Otherwise I wouldn't have loved and used them for 10 years. The subwoofer is nice though.

Here's the summary:

  • HS5: You need the subwoofer
  • HS7: Subwoofer is nicer, but fine without
  • HS8: No subwoofer needed, but is a bonus

The HS8 was my first choice, but eventually I went for the HS7 instead.  The HS7 is smaller and that fits my room better. The HS7 is cheaper and was closer to the amount I was willing to spend at the time. And since my monitors are positioned against a wall, which amplifies the bass, the need for the HS8 got reduced somewhat.

Hi again alans,

The info about Hamilton's creating new content was in an email to me confirming their quote. No mention was made of what it might be.

I bought my Genos (1) from ePianos in Nov. 2019 and got the USB stick which I found very useful. I guess Hamilton's content will be something similar.

I doubt I'll be making any new registrations or style changes to my current Genos so while I'm waiting for the new one I'm going to carry out the migration process described in the Yamaha Genos 2 Compatibility Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_Uwn0Oaocg

And getting acquainted with creating my Lead Sheets in MuseScore 4 instead of 3.

Thank you for your recommendations @Maarten. The speakers of the SX900 were fine for me. I did connect an external speaker set + sub, but I didn't use it much. I am now also considering the HS7 set, because I miss something in the middle and high tones. In my current configuration I solved that with an external mixer.
I'm still looking for the differences between the HS7 and the HS7i. Not yet found. In terms of specifications on the Yamaha site, they seem identical?
The sub I have remains the same and I use it if necessary (I prefer not to use it). I will nevertheless have to change the connection diagram. I still have to look into the consequences for the various connections because the G2 has a inbuild USB audio device. Especially because I also used a separate extern audio device. Anyway, nice to dive into that again. ;)
My best regards,
Ton

Hi Ton 37
No problem using External Sound or inbuilt sound
We have a choice, but i will probably stay with my Focusrite
Genos, I7 computer 32 gig ram, Focusrite 6i6, Cubase controller, Focal Alpha Monitors, Yamaha DXR8 Speakers
Cubase 10, Sonarworks, Izotope.  Sampletank, Arturia and Korg software.  Now IK Mixbox

Thnx. that is also an option. I have to renovate my 'home studio' a bit to accommodate the Genos2 + new speakers, so that is a great time to see how I can best connect everything and have easy access to it, without having to worry about everything and not have to crawl. I'm not so flexible anymore  ;D
My best regards,
Ton

the differences between the HS7 and the HS7i.

The HS(x)i has mounting holes, so it's easier to mount to a wall or ceiling.

That's the only difference.

How are you planning to use hook up your Focusrite? do you have a way of getting digital audio from your new Genos 2 into the Focusrite? As far as I know, this is not possible, because the Genos 2 does not have the S/PDIF digital audio output that's on the Genos 1.

Thanks for mentioning this, Michael! I just gave someone bad advice.

Once again, Yamaha's hardware engineers felt compelled to save $3 on a $5,700 instrument. These penny-ante engineering decisions on a premium keyboard drive me nuts.

Hi Michael

I will do the same as Genos 1

I record midi file and transfer to Cubase, do edits and then use the Focusrite to convert to wave file, split into separate tracks and including drums and then to mix the song.
It will use the Genos 2 and also you can use VST as well if you like.

All the Best

Good luck with it. If you don't love it, hopefully you can return it, but then at least you'll know.
