Yes, it's a shame that's not been fixed. Means you can't really keep more than one usb permanently attached.

Just checked the Genos1 documentation. That disclaimer (page 115) about drive order is new for Genos2. I'll bet this issue drove Yamaha support crazy!

This smells like some "Linux thing" wherein the order in which USB drives are mounted is not guaranteed to be the same after power-ups.

Just leave everything on USER and you're good.  :)  :D

I did a little introspection about why this issue bugged me so much. (I'm a heart patient -- I need to calm down.) :-)

I spent the last 3 or so months shopping for an 88 and studied CLP, CSP and CVP specs. I like the Yamaha piano sound and was trying to find the best match with my needs.

If you feel bad about 15GB on Genos2, CVP-909 is 2GB. $14,000 USD (MAP). CLP-785 is 1.4MB. $6,400.

That is not a typo: 1.4Megabytes.

Now, I don't post this to inflame people because we sure as heck don't need any more of that. But, really Yamaha? What up?  :o

Seeing the change in Genos2 pushed this donkey over the edge.  :D

I cannot see what the big  deal is .
If you press usb 1 and it is not what you expect press the other one and it is all there.
:) You can stick a lot in the bomb bay expansion. More than you can wave a stick at. ::) eg samples
if you have a computer using vst instruments you keep then on the C drive and all their samples can be run from storage in the D drive.
Same sort of thing with the Genos using USB.
By the way is it still USB2 or have Yamaha put USB 3  in now? :)

It seems people who buy piano won't have to upload new sounds. Perhaps it's true.
Difficult to consider arranger players share the same approach.

No more memory is, for me, a sign Yamaha didn't want to spend a lot of resources for hardware evolution on Genos 2 generation.
That can be a strategic choice (like Intel CPU) . Perhaps Yamaha is already preparing Genos 3/4/5 big changes.

And I won't be surprised AI integration reshuffles the hardware topic too.

15 Gb is what it is. The real question for yourself is: are you short of that? And why? I'm not a sound, voice or style hunter anymore; my collecting frenzy is over, since the G2 has so many beautiful Voices, so many good Styles and so many beautiful Effects, that I don't worry whether 15Gb is too little.  ;)
My best regards,

The issue is that if registrations are tied so say USB1:// then they don't work if the stick that the keyboard has assigned UBS1 to is not the one that you expected it to be.

Hi.
I really don't understand the fuzz about the reduced internal usermemory. May I ask how many of the major amount of the G1 users has ever filled it up?
At Genos as well as Genos2 there is several USB ports to connect memorystick, i.e. the port 'down under' can easily be used as permanent 'addondrive'.
USB memorystick is lowcost nowadays, so if put in an 64 or 128GB (or even larger) it should be more than enough for most of us.
Just my 2c.  ;D

If you have the one at the bottom as permanen connected, and remeber to not have anything in the other USB ports at startup, the one at bottom will always be USB1.
It works great for me.....

One of the biggest causes of problems with memory sticks is not the size but that you can't just swop them when you want. Have one underneath when you switch on then put one in the front, live. Switch off then on and usb1 has switched . It's a shame Yamaha can't sort it out to give us a better system.

valimaties

And the second problem is that you cannot compare USB stick with a build-in flash memory chip on the motherboard. USB Sticks could be damaged in time, depending on how the system ejects them on the system shutdown or in case of an unexpected power-down. The flash on the motherboard it's another thing.

But, you can also have a backup USB stick and copy from time to time all the data from underneath USB stick.

It's more the 3GB limit that annoys me. Currently on Genos 1 it's full. And I haven't all the samples and packs I would like to have. On Genos 2,  if you consider you will load the Genos pack (and I will), it will even be less finally.... 6 years later, it's a pity.

Nevertheless there are people who use multi pads with wav samples and are concerned with the 15GB size.

Yes, if you have any other than the 'down under' USB plugged in when switch on again, if not, the bottom USB will stay as USB1.
Agree that it could be more convient if the USB ports had dedicated numbers or driveletters.

It does seem that the G2 "Genos" pack is mostly just wave content from the "Genos 1 V2 Superior Pack". So if you had that installed on G1, don't double-count it within the 3GB.

Just put the extra on usb Expansion and you can call anything up you want up to 100 plus gigabytes or terrabytes if they could get it on a stick
"Jumping Gigawatts"!! ;D ::)

Use what you only want to use on the machine and the rest is on the Expansion to call up and even put to registration. Your song will see the expansion content.
If you tell a computer where to go it will hopefully obey. Just hope it does not answer you back. ;D

I have had my Genos 1 for six years and have never had a problem with using The USB underneath 68 Gb has served me well and I have an awful lot of stuff stored.
Also I have never left a USB stick plugged in the front port on switch off. Certainly have never had to use the back port. I do however make sure my USB sticks are well organized with everything in folders so I can find it quickly. I tend to use one large stick instead of lots of little ones.

Also I have never left a USB stick plugged in the front port on switch off. .

Can you or someone elaborate more on this as I can't see a problem why? I would have thought constantly inserting/removing the USB would weaken or even damage the USB port so I would have thought leaving it in would be the best thing to do.

I always use short extension  leads in USB ports and let them take the strain.

Exactly Eileen I have a short extension usb on the Front knowing usb would be removed and plugged back in several times when transferring from Keyboard to PC, the extension would be damaged first and not the USB port on the keyboard.

Since we are talking USB, i would like to know whether Genos 2 has USB2 or USB3 ?
The Spec just says USB - Yes :)
USB 3 is a bit faster than 2 i believe, also more up to date.

hi John,
I believe Genos2 also has USB2, which is enough for current keyboards hardware. The thing is, USB2 already has faster transfer rate than keyboards can handle and so USB3 would bring nothing.

Thank you very much, I will look into that. But still not sure why it would be a problem not to just leave the USB plugged in? That's what I've always done and it's never caused an issue before.

EileenL

If you only have one USB plugged in there is no problem as it will read USB1 for your playlist to work for you.

Thank you, I'm glad it was just that rather than a more technical or deeper mechanical issue that I wasn't aware of. My current Genos has a pen drive that ePianos installed with their Tipsters pack and I think they may do the same with the Genos2's as I am sure they said to me they will include some extra's, I'll just have to wait and see.

I really want to let this subject go, especially since many folks are satisfied.

As a long-time Yamaha customer, tho', I should not have to pop over to the store to buy a $20 USB flash drive when the premium Yamaha { digital piano, arranger, synthesizer } could and should have large, competitive internal storage. These keyboards are expensive and are promoted as premium.

Yamaha engineering has been skating on this issue across ALL of its product lines. Toyota pulled this penny-pinching nonsense in the mid-2000's and lost their good rep. It was noticeable. That's all I'm sayin'...

Y'all take care -- pj

Well, ok, the 500gb HD on Tyros 5 was probably excessive. As probably was the 320gb HD on the T4.
I never filled up the 80gb on the T3 either.

But with the G1, I have so many failed takes in wav files (that I really should delete) for youtube videos, that I've used up... 3.5gb...? Ok, frankly, I'm surprised that I've used up that little. It would be easy to fill though, if someone were to transfer all their karaoke mp3's into there (I have several customers who did that on their Tyroses. Tyrii?)

ok, maybe the 15gb isn't as big an issue as I (also) thought, but with everything else increasing expansion storage for samples (Montage M, Pa5x), *not* increasing it on the G2 is a let down.

Yes I agree, was a strange decision. Would be interesting to find out if there is a justified reason for this.

USB 3 is a bit faster than 2 i believe, also more up to date.

USB 2.0 has a black "block" inside the USB port.
In contrast, USB 3.0 has a blue "block" inside the USB port.
The more recent USB 3.1 port also differs visually in that the "block" inside the USB 3.1 port is red.

USB 2.0 transfer speed is 480 megabits per second (Mbps), while USB 3.0 transfer speed is 4,800 Mbps. This means USB 3.0 is approximately 10 times faster than USB 2.0. More recently, USB 3.1 has also been released and has a data transfer rate of 10,000 Mbps. This is twice as fast as USB 3.0 and twenty times as fast as USB 2.0.

I don't know but suspect they're still using the old 2.0 USB hardware along with most of the rest of the older hardware found in G1. You can now check yourself and report back!
