Bonus Playlist for PSR SX700 tutorial

Today I received my new PSR SX700 keyboard. Previously I had a PSR E463, so I have never worked with a keyboard like the SX700 before. I downloaded the bonus playlist from the official Yamaha website but does anyone know a good tutorial on how to install this playlist on my SX700? I don't know how to do this.

The First thing to do is to get the Bonus Playlist from the Yamaha website.

You will do this on a Windows PC. Note that it is a Zip file, so once you've downloaded it you'll need to unzip it. (I use the free program 7 Zip) .
Transfer the unzipped file..... don't open it, just transfer the whole file.... to a memory stick. Your SX will look for this file. You cannot use it if it's not been unzipped first.


OK. So as above.... Download the unzipped Bonus playlist to a usb stick.
Put the stick in your usb port
Press the Expansion/User button in your Styles area to the left of the main screen. Press the PLAYLIST button above the main control wheel.
Where it says 'sample playlist'  press those words in that box.
Now you will see a box for USB1 appear. Press it
You will see that your Bonus playlist is showing.
Again... Press on the words "Bonus playlist for SX700"
Then press the Playlist button
Your playlist will now be on the screen.

Select a song by pressing on it, and then press the Load logo at the bottom right of the screen. A green tick will appear next to the selected song, and the keyboard will automatically set up the style ready for you to play.

Keith, thanks for such a great set of instructions. I am a new Yamaha SX900 user, and have spent a lot of time trying to figure our why the Bonus Playlist would not work. You sequence was perfect. Only one problem, I do not get the green check mark next to a selected playlist, so they will not open. Do you know the answer? Gary

Glad you found my instructions understandable.

Ok, so you've got the SX700 bonus playlist on the screen in front of you.
Pick any song from the playlist by simply pressing on the title of that song
That will highlight it. You can also, should you wish, use the main control knob under the playlist button to select your song.
Then press Load. That's when you will see the green tick.
That sets up the song ready to play. Until you press Load it won't select..

These photos should help. Here I'm using my Tyros 5 playlist, and I'm choosing to play Bluesette.

Keith, your precise explanations are the best. I have tried what you so nicely explained, what I get when I press load, is a message that says "File not found, or file name inappropriate". Sometimes the sub-files on the USB stick for "expansion" functions just disappear at the point where the style should automatically load. I have fixed that with a sx900 restart, but it isn't working with the playlist. I am wondering if my USB stick is not compatible! The sx900 is new to me, and maybe the fault is with the keyboard. The most probable fault is likely with the user lol. Thanks so much for taking your time to assist me, Gary

Just re-checked the USB drive, it is on the Yamaha list. Am going to uninstall the playlist and do a new install once again.

Yes, it would appear to possibly be the actual usb stick.

If it's any help I use Sandisc Cruzer blade

TRY formatting your existing drive on the instrument. Use the Function button in your Menu.

But in all honesty some older discs are best scrapped.

The "mistake" that occurs most often when "installing" Playlists is that when you unzip the zip file, an additional folder is unintentionally created (usually with the name of the zip file). This additional folder may NOT be copied to the stick.

Here is detailed description:

Unzip the downloaded file "BonusPlaylistForPSR-SX700.zip" on your computer. You will get a folder named "PSR-SX700 Playlist". Copy THIS folder onto the USB stick, directly into the root directory, not into another folder on the stick.

IF you unzipped the zip file and got a folder named "BonusPlaylistForPSR-SX700", open it on your computer and you will see the "PSR-SX700 Playlist" folder mentioned above (as well as a ReadMe.txt text file, which also contains detailed instructions on how to use the Playlist).

In any case, only copy the "PSR-SX700 Playlist" folder onto the stick. If you open this folder on your computer, you will see the 9 Genre subfolders it contains (Ballroom, Dance, Entertainer, etc.). Each of these subfolders contains various Registration Bank files (.rgt) and a Playlist file (.tsv). Later, only the .tsv Playlist files in the individual Genre folders will be displayed in the Playlist Selection display on the SX700.

In order to load one of these Playlist files, you usually first have to open the desired Genre folder on the SX700. Only then will you see the relevant Playlist file and can load it. To load another Playlist file, you first have to go out of the current folder and then open another folder.

For faster access, I recommend (before copying the Playlist folder to the USB stick) to copy all .tsv Playlist files in the 9 Genre folders on the computer and paste them outside the Genre folders, i.e. directly in the "PSR-SX700 Playlist" folder. This means you have direct access to all 9 Playlist files on the SX700.


By the way, make sure that the USB stick that contains the Playlist is either the only stick connected or is at least the first one connected. This stick must be displayed as "USB 1", otherwise the Playlist files will not work.

Hi Chris, I was just about to initialize the keyboard, and re-set up everything in hopes that the "Playlist" would miraculously work. Then, I though I should probably check this thread first. WOW. I see you have been thanked 2852 times for this post, now add 1........thanks a million Chris. I have had this Yamaha keyboard for 5 weeks, so am trying to learn each function one at a time, before going on, so check mark Playlists thanks to you and Keith. Love the sound of the SX900, and it just feels really nice to play and kind of entices the player to adlib (get into the music) much more. Don't know if the Genos feels the same. Anyway, you just made my Day. Thanks again. Gary
