Loading BUP file into new Keyboard.

Keyboard Master

Hi everyone. I'm currently in the process of selling my psr s770 that I had since launch (2015). For financial reasons. But afterwards once I get some extra money I am looking into buying at least the sx700. I was just curious will by Backup file from the psr s770 load into the sx700 which should restore all my panel settings user styles, songs, etc. I'm just wondering.

Hi Keyboard Master,

A .BUP Backup file (containing the user System settings, user MIDI settings, user Effect settings, user Music Finder settings (if available) and the contents of the User drive) only works with the keyboard model with which it was created. So it is useless on another model.

The only thing you could perhaps take over from the S770 to the SX700 would be the user MIDI settings (if you have created your own MIDI templates) and perhaps (!) the user Effect settings. To do this, you can save the relevant S700 Setup files in "Function > System" using the buttons "MIDI Setup Files" and "User Effect Files".

If you have created your own Music Finder Records and want to continue using them on the SX700 (as a Playlist), I recommend saving the current content directly in the Music Finder on the S700 (as a .mfd file), i.e. NOT in the "System" display described above .

You would have to manually copy files that are in the S700 User drive to a USB stick. Each file type (e.g. Style, Registration Bank, User Voice, MIDI Song) must be copied SEPARATELY.

You should be able to use S700 files on USB sticks (e.g. Styles) directly on the SX700. However, I'm not entirely sure about Registration Bank files: they might need to be converted using Murray Best's YRM (Yamaha Registration Manager) program.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris for your inputs. I really appreciate it: so whenever I get the sx700 I will make sure I have all my content individually backed up to the flash drive: also speaking of that. I have them all on my computer too.

Chris,

Can the name of a .BUP file be changed on the PC and then be recognized by the keyboard if the need to restore ever happens? For example I would like to name my backups using the date it was made:  "10_31_23.BUP"

Thanks

Hi Rich,

To be honest, I've never tried this before. It might even work. However, I recommend not renaming BUP files, but rather using a separate folder named with the current date for each BUP file to archive, e.g. "2023-10-31".

By the way, every user must weigh up the benefits of the backup method using a BUP file for themselves. An advantage is that you can bring a replacement keyboard (of the same type) to the same status with one click, i.e. User System settings, User MIDI settings, User Effect settings, Music Finder settings (on older models) and the contents of the User drive. The latter in particular can also be a disadvantage, since when restoring a BUP file, the current content of the User drive is always overwritten with the OLD data. For models with a large User drive (e.g. Genos) and when (many) Audio files are in the User drive and/or with generally a large number of files in the User drive, creating a BUP file often does not work as desired or is not possible at all.

I therefore recommend that you instead back up the System settings (i.e. the Setup files "System", "MIDI" and "User Effect") individually and copy the contents of the User drive regularly to backup media (ion the Genos via USB Storage Mode, otherwise via USB stick + copying to the computer).

Chris,

I currently backup as you just described: not changing the .BUP file name because of the unkown result, and instead archive them by folders named with dates. And yes, I also manually copy all user styles, vce, registrations and pad files to flash drive, then PC and archive those along with the .BUP. For me the .BUP is only if the whole keyboard suddenly fails.

I'll take a look at manually backing up those other settings as you mentioned.

Thanks!
