Styles are not easy to create on any computer. There is always a lot of work needed to get anything descent sounding. There are thousands of Yamaha styles to be had and you will usually find something you can use.

I agree with Eileen on this: style should be created on keyboard itself. Yes, is not that easy and can be time consuming (depends on style you wish to make), but is still faster and easier than on computer.

About "thousands of styles available".... just my personal opinion: learn how to make styles. At first you will spend a lot of time to get decent result.. but you will learn by practicing. And after a while you'll be able to make a style faster than checking "thousands of styles" to find something good enough (depending on your criteria).

Now, a different opinion... :-)

I had a long conversation with Heratch (Yamaha) above style development. I agree with his main observation: style creation has a technical side and a musical side. Some people master one side or the other, but they need both sets of skills to create a new style.

I've converted and created well over 100 styles. Please see links below for how the conversions were performed.

I agree that you will expend effort to learn what is inside of a style file and how to create/edit one in a DAW. You will also need a few specialist tools like the ones at Jørgen Sørensen's site http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/

Folks need to ask themselves if the effort is worth it. Certain musical genres are underrepresented -- funk, contemporary/hip hop jazz and downtempo, in my own case. Plus, I don't want to sound like everybody else. (Opinion: Yamaha's funk styles sound like "your parent's funk".)

Generally, I start with existing MIDI patterns in order to compensate for my own weaknesses. Fortunately, there are many MIDI libraries which cover the genres of interest to me.

There are several existing threads on the forum regarding style creation. That's the best place to start.

Maybe check with Jorgen, on his site it says some of the Java software might run on Mac.

I used to use the program below ( on pc) to edit some of my Yamaha styles. ie change an existing style into something I wanted.

Onboard recording probably would be your best option.
