Can you record a style by transmitting MIDI events rather than playing manually?

When you are in a style recording mode it seems like it doesn't recognize received note-on midi events, it wants you to physically play the keyboard. I tried sending events to all 16 channels and it's not capturing them, they do produce sound as expected but are not being recorded. Is there a solution to this or it's by design?

Style recording can receive MIDI information from an external device, but additional settings are required. Watch the video that describes the process.
