USB drive not recognized after S770 powered up

I have been using Tyros3 and Genos, each time these keyboards are powered up, the USB drives (that were already plugged in) are immediately recognized by these two keyboards.

I bought a PSR S770 (second hand) yesterday, S770 does not recognized the plugged in USB drive.
However, if I unplug the USB and plug it back in, now the S770 recognizes it. This means I have to unplug the USB before powering up the keyboard, then plug it back in later.

Kind of weird, is this normal for the S770 ?

Not normal, unfortunately. On any Yamaha you should be able to leave the USB in and not have to keep unplugging and plugging back in.

Keep in mind certain models have a lower power draw available for the USB port (the PSRsx600/DGX670 for example) so you will have trouble getting anything larger than a 32gb to register (some very energy efficient 64gb sticks will work, but that's blind luck).

There are apps you can use to measure the mA (current in milliamps) draw of each USB device. I suspect the USB stick you're using has just a slightly high power draw; Find a lower power draw one (usually smaller size, but also slower) and see if you can successfully leave it in on bootup

Most ports can provide:
USB 1.0, USB 1.1, and USB 2.0 standard downstream ports can supply up to 500 mA (milliamperes).
USB 3.0 standard downstream ports can provide up to 900 mA.
USB 3.0 charging downstream ports can supply up to 1,500 mA.

I found out empirically that 700ma was the max current draw back in the Tyros 2 era, but as I no longer have easy access to a bunch of USB powered hard drives (if you look underneath it tells you the current draw of each one individually. Even the same model doesn't guarantee a current draw) so I don't know what the current draw of the PSRs770 is.

But in a nutshell, see if you can find a smaller USB stick and try that (I have a 128GB main stick which doesn't work on DGX670 or PSRsx600; probably too much current draw for them to handle. I initially thought it was a FAT issue (PSR3000 and CVP300 series are only Fat 16 right out of the box, so you can't use a USB stick larger than 2GB on them) but then someone else on this forum said they got a 64gb stick to work on a DGX670/PSRsx600, which suggests current draw as the limiting factor.

Cheers,

Mark

I tried two USB (4GBs and 32 GBs), both share same symtoms. Will try more.
For now, I use an USB extender cable (always plugged in the keyboard), so the USB drive can be plugged / unplugged as many times as I need without "gradually damaging" the USB port on the keyboard.
I use extender cable on my Tyros3 too. Just two cents of precaution.

Try formatting the USB sticks on the S770 before using.

Some brands of USB drives have a small, built-in program that must be deleted before it will function in your keyboard. However, as Eileen stated, try formatting the USB drive in your keyboard, which usually solves the problem.

Good luck.

I will reformat this USB drive to see if the issue goes away.

GOOD NEWS,  after doing an onboard reformatting the USB drive.
The strange issue is GONE.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELPS.

The same issue came back a few days later.
I ended up unplugging the USB then plug it back (via an extender cable to minimize damage to the USB port of the keyboard.
Please note, the issue is there even without the extender.
Using another USB drive shows same issue.
I guess I may have to do a keyboard reset.

I use another old 2GB USB drive, and amazingly this one does not have the power up issue.
My S770 shows USB1 and USB2 and USB1 is the one.

tyros2009. I also get the same problem when power on our Laptop...USB not reconised.

Suggest...Just unplug USB after power off.

The brand or quality of a USB thumb drive may make a difference. Not a keyboard problem, but I had bought some budget(cheap) off brand USB drives from Amazon to play mp3 files in my truck and my wife's car. Both vehicles are Toyota's and while my trucks audio system would play the mp3 files perfectly, my wife's car with an almost identical audio system wouldn't even read the same USB drive as well as the other budget USB drives I had bought. I now pretty much stick with known brand names such as Sandisk or PNY and buy from a reputable seller that is less likely to sell counterfeit/fake brand names which generally are poor in quality and may not have the capacity or speed that a real brand would.

Knowing this is a sort of USB compatibility, I feel comfortable knowing it's not a keyboard issue.
