Now I Can Play Baker Street

I have always liked the song Baker Street, by Gerry Rafferty. But I was never able to play it to my satisfaction on my synthesizer. I figured I would take a shot at it on my new Genos and see how that went.

I found this video by Alois Müller that I really like. I was able to figure out all of the chords he played by slowing the video playback down to 1/2 and 1/4 speed (you can do this in the iOS YouTube app).

I downloaded the registration file he used from his website (search for "Baker").

I was then able to play the song pretty well except for the quick riff he plays at 1:50 in the video. He is much faster than I am. I figured this would be a good opportunity to learn how to put together a Multi Pad.

I first tried it by using Cubase. That did not work well for reasons I still want to investigate. I talked about it in this thread. Fortunately for me, Joe H suggested I try PadMaker-Midi, a very cool app with a very simple and obvious user interface. I was able to use it to put together BakerStreet.pad. The riff is associated with Multi Pad button 2. Button 1 is a percussion instrument (a shaker) that Müller programmed to be always playing.

Here is a link to a copy of Müller's registration file.

I'm very pleased with my experience with my new Genos so far, and also with the kind of help that's available around here.

I hope that some others get to have fun with this, and I hope I posted it in the right place.

You will have to rename it to .pad.

I removed the BakerStreet multipad you attached to your topic.  Please don't circumvent our system by uploading files to our server and renaming the file extension.  You can provide a link to your file(s) via your own online storage account by modifying your post above.

OK. But I wonder why a .pad file isn't allowed. It's part of the Yamaha/arranger ecosystem. What's the reasoning?

Because some individuals and companies sell multipad files and we don't want copyrighted files being stored on our system server, Michael.

So, same rule for .sty, .mid, .rgt, etc?

Is there anywhere these rules are spelled out on this site?

When you select "Attachments and other options", the allowed files types are displayed, Michael.

Please refer to the "Posting Guidelines" and paragraph entitled "Sharing Material" at the following link:

OK, but I suggest that you modify this section of the Posting Guidelines (emphasis added):

Attachments

In some cases the use of attachments may be an appropriate way of sharing files and information. There is a limit on the size of attachments. For any single attachment, the maximum file size allowed is 7 MB. Up to 3 attachments, totaling less than 21 MB, can be added to a single post.

There is also a constraint on the kind of files allowed as attachments enforced by monitoring the files extension (file type). Allowable attachments include:
- text files (txt, doc, docx, pdf, rtf),
- picture files (jpg, jpeg, gif, mpg, png),
- music files (mid, kar, wav, mp3),
- Yamaha files (sty, prs, set, fps, vce, rgt, mfd, pad), and
- Other (zip, xls, xlsx, mcsz, mxl, m2s).

I think it would be helpful to add a note about why Yamaha files should not be uploaded due to copyright concerns.

Joe Waters' last edit of the "Posting Guidelines" was in November, 2019, and the new restrictions went into effect on January 1, 2020.  I knew this was out of date, but we've not had any questions about this subject until now.  I'll let Joe know that we probably need to update this paragraph.

Hi Roger,

Not to milk the subject completely dry here but I tried to upload a PDF document a few weeks ago but PDFs are not allowed either. Is there any particular reason they would be off the list? This is the only forum, to which I belong, that won't allow such a heavily used document format. The PDF format is a huge part of the world (unfortunately ::)) but we're stuck with it in a lot of cases.

Thanks and stay well...

We don't want the possibility of copyright material being stored on our forum server, so members must share all files via their own online storage accounts.

Thanks, Roger. I wonder why the other forums don't share the same concerns. You'd think they would know better ;). No worries. If I need to post a PDF, I'll do so on a sharing site.

I do allow members to share there own work files but I am also ready to remove any copy write ones. I don't allow the sharing of music books in any form as this takes away our local music shops bread and butter.
Even if things are hosted elsewhere a forum can still be accountable for what is aloud to be posted on it.
As for multi pads I do create a lot for my own use but will always share them if asked as they are my own work. Have never seen anyone selling just multi pads anywhere as yet.

The purpose of the poster was to share how he was able to create a version of Baker street that he was happy with, and shared with us how he did it. But all of us got caught up in the troubles of file sharing😀 Sorry OP, we are just human😀
