I wonder if some of you Cubase experts can help me extract a song from Cubase.
My younger brother has a very beautiful home music studio where he composed and produced his own music. He used Cubase along with an array of top of the line recording equipment and musical instruments to make his recordings, which were top notch. . Sadly he passed away last week after a year long battle with cancer.
The last song he wrote and completed recording is, in my view, (and the view of everyone else who has heard it) a quite stunning composition, and I want to play this at his memorial service next week. But when he played the song for me a few weeks ago, he was playing it directly from Cubase thorough his studio sound system. It seems that he never got round to downloading it onto normal media as either a .wav or MP3 file, because his health was deteriorating rapidly.
I have managed to get into his system, and can see the file exists but don't know how to select, play or extract it. Cubase seems so complicated. Can anyone help give me some pointers.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Mike.  May the memory of your brother comfort you at this time.

I don't use Cubase or I would be most willing to help you.  I'm certain that someone will respond to your request.

I'm sorry for your loss, Mike.  :'(

I will try to explain to you the procedure for exporting a song. This is a description for Cubase 10.5 but the other versions are very similar.
1. Turn on all devices connected to the computer, sound card, keyboard, sound module ...
2. Turn on the computer and run Cubase
3. Select the Recent field and open the Project with the song name
4. Select Edit> Macros> Export Audio Mixdown Whole Song from the menu
5. Check Output Channes (stereo out), set File Format as I do, select File Location as desired and confirm with Export Audio. (picture 2)

You should still look at the status of the canals in Cubase. (picture 3) It depends on the project but for a start I suggest there is no MUTE status.

best regards, ckobu

Sorry for your loss, Mike
Hope you're doing well.

Once you've located the correct Project on Cubase
Ckobu pictures of the export page is correct.
But just go to FILE and select Export and then Audio Mixdown.
On the left side of the export page, be sure that Stereo Output is selected.
Make that range is set correctly on Cubase and the Export format is the way you want it.

The Interface is shouldn't be much different even if it's as old as Cubase 8.
Regards Norman.

Hi Norman

It is not enough to just select Export. If only a part of the project is selected, the sound will be performed only for that part. He won't have the whole song.
To make sure he has the whole song, he has to make my fourth step.

That's why I mentioned select range  ;)

Mike,

I offer my sympathy for the loss of your brother.  Cancer is a tough disease to cope with.

PS: I'm sure folks here would like to hear your brothers song if you succeed in exporting it as an audio file.

Hi Mike :

I feel very sorry to hear this terrible news.

Joe ( and others)
That you for your kind words.
I am making progress on the export of recordings, although some of his more recent recordings are proving difficult because he may not have had time to do final mixdown as his disease overtook him more rapidly than any of us anticipated. But I will eventually get there.
I am unable to post any of his songs at this time, because I am unsure of the copyright status, but maybe later.
Spending time in his music studio, I am appreciating the quality of what he had. He built it himself over the years as a labor of love with no expense spared. He was also a very talented woodworker and cabinet maker, so it is luxurious with sumptuous sound panels, hand built mixing desk and effects all without a wire in sight!  And  it has an stunning sound system using Neumann mics and large monitors. His top of the line array of instruments include Fender guitars, basses, and combos, digital keyboards and a hand built Lowden acoustic which he treasured.
What happens to it now is an open question, his wife is torn between keeping it as a lasting memory to him, but then again maybe finding it too painful to go in there.

It took me a while to figure out how to do  things like setting range, and file path, - not to mention just accessing his computer, and the peripherals. But following your instructions I did manage to export all the songs. Or more accurately, all the songs I could access on Cubase pro 11. But this was only 6 songs and I know he has many others. He has fivey versions of Cubase Pro installed form 7 thru 11. I suspect the other songs may be in the earlier versions, but when I try to open them I get a message that it cannot locate VST files. And it fails to open. Any ideas??
BTW, although there is a learning curve, I really began to appreciate th power of this Cubase software as I went through his project files.

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, I cannot help you in this regard, as I only work very little with Cubase & VST.

Best regards,
Chris
● Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that, and - just did it.
● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

In Cubase you have to select all the tracks from the song.
