Need suggestions on software

Years ago, I had a Windows 98 desktop with Sonar 3.0 and Voyetra( Turtle Beach) Digital Orchestrator  as programs to my psr 1500.

Years later I want to get back to using  a simple software package for midi, but Windows 10 will no longer recognize those old midi programs.

I have a new Sonar package, but frankly it's so complicated that it's taking days and weeks do do the simplest tasks. Like change a voice or find drum maps. God forbid finding the effects section.

So I need a recommendation for a simpler midi program that I can learn before I die. I will be getting Psr Sx900 soon, but  want to be able to take midi files to the computer for  editing.   I already have hundreds of midi files to work with.. .

Preemptive thanks for your comments.

Hi Dave,

welcome to the PSR Tutorial Forum!

I especially recommend the following programs for editing MIDI files:

Midifile Optimizer XI, current version: v11.3.1.14189 (not cheap, but worth every penny :)⁣):
>>> www.midiland.de
>>> https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=&sl=de&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.midiland.de%2Fde%2FOptimizerXI.htm

MixMaster, current version: v21r1.10 (free)
>>> https://psrtutorial.com/MB/EV_Files/mixmaster.html

PSRUTI, current version: v8.21 (free)
>>> https://heikoplate.de/psruti.html

Cakewalk by BandLab (free DAW software):

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Am I correct in thinking that Bandlab's Cakewalk is only usable when an internet connection is available?   I d like something usable on my labtop, without needing an internet connection when it is used. Maybe the down load process is confusing me. But when I open the app, it opens the internet, not a resident program on my laptop.

Hi Dave
An internet connection is only required to register the program. Through BandLab Assistant you can select the full version of the program and after that the internet is not required for its operation.

Thamks. it jusr struck me odd that the internet opens every time I go to use the software.

I am curious about Midifile Optimizer. It is pretty expensive at $200. What all do you use it for?

Thanks.

Hi Bill,

Midifile Optimizer XI has so many features that it is not possible to list them all here. ;)

It is best to download the free DEMO version and install it on your PC or Mac:
>>> https://www.midiland.de/de/OptimizerXI_DLdemo.htm

Note: You cannot save with the DEMO version. However, almost all functions of the full version are available.

To access the manual, click on "Help > Operating manual" after installation. If the user interface is in German after installation, you can switch it to English under "Einstellungen > Einstellungen zeigen" (the program must then be restarted).

You can do practically all MIDI file editing with the Optimizer. You have direct access to all preset voices and drum kits of your keyboard model. When changing voices, all DSP and other settings are automatically loaded (can be switched off if desired).

You have direct, graphical access to all DSP/Effect parameters (e.g. with Genos, Tyros, PSR-SX and PSR-S models).

You can quickly copy or delete certain areas, e.g. to shorten or lengthen a file. I actually only use a DAW to edit MIDI files when I have to "cut" a lot.

A highlight of the Optimizer is the "Drum Splitter". This allows you to move certain drum instruments to up to two additional channels. A total of up to three drum channels are possible (e.g. to use different drum kits at the same time). Please see also the attached picture.

Incidentally, the FULL version also offers the option of recording MIDI files as MP3s (including the Lyrics) in Batch mode.

If you have questions about certain functions/details of the Optimizer program, you are welcome to contact me/us again here.

Best regards,
Chris
