Can I use electronic drums to record drum patterns in the style creator?

I have ordered an SX900 and I am just waiting patiently.  I want to create my own styles.  I know that I can use the keyboard to play the drum to record a pattern.  I was wondering if it was possible to use an electronic drum kit as a midi controller and record the drum pattern with an actual drummer playing how you would live and record that on the style through midi.  I have actually used a drum module as the sounds for a keyboard style and that worked.  What about the reverse?  Any thoughts or suggestions or tips?

Side note.  If that was not possible,  could I record the midi drums on the electric drums in a daw and put the midi file of the drum pattern into a style.  I'm decent at playing the drums on the keys but there are some beats that are challenging to dublicate. Thanks in advance for any advice!

According to my info yes you can do the option no 2 record your drum seq in daw and u can receive the same midi signal on your keyboard to record drum track

Hi matrix1999,

For Tyros models and Genos, which have two DIN MIDI IN sockets, you can connect an external keyboard via MIDI B IN on Channel 1 by default (when using the preset MIDI template "All Parts"), which then reacts in the same way as the internal keyboard .

SX900/700 models only have one DIN MIDI IN socket. By default, this is used to address the SONG parts. However, you can change the MIDI settings at any time and create your own MIDI template in which, for example, the part "KEYBOARD" is assigned in "RECEIVE Port 1 / Channel 1". Then you can connect e.g. an e-drum set to the MIDI IN socket and use this to play directly into the Style Creator.

It should be noted, however, that there are many different drum instruments available in a drum voice, which you cannot access from the e-drum set as easily as when playing with a piano keyboard.

It would also be possible to connect the e-drum set via MIDI interface to the COMPUTER on which a DAW program such as Cubase is running. The computer is also connected via MIDI (or USB-MIDI) to the keyboard on which a suitable MIDI template is active. So you can also play live into the Song Creator with the e-drum set. You could also map the notes sent by the e-drum to other note numbers in this way. Of course, you could also record the e-drum set in the DAW at the same time, edit it there and then, if necessary, control the Style Creator with such an edited sequence.

I recommend that you first familiarize yourself with the keyboard's Style Creator and first use the keyboard to play drum patterns. Basically, style programming is something like the "high school" of MIDI programming. If you already have experience in MIDI file programming, you have a great advantage, but there will still be a lot to learn.

Incidentally, you can also create styles entirely on the computer. Unfortunately, since Yamaha does not provide a program for this, in most cases you will need various style / MIDI programming tools from third-party manufacturers in addition to a MIDI sequencer program (DAW).

For very simple styles, however, the DAW alone would be sufficient: You load a style template that contains all the necessary markers (for the individual style sections, and only uses MIDI channels 9 - 16. In this case, it is important that the bass, melody and chord patterns (channels 11 - 16) are programmed in the chord "C major 7." Channels 9 and 10 are always used for the drums.

The finished sequence is then saved as a Standard MIDI file (type SMF0) and the file extension is changed from .MID to .STY.

This file is now loaded on the keyboard. Standard CASM data (control data) are automatically added, and after saving again in the Style Creator, you then have a complete style. However, until this is really as playable as you would like it to be, several further processing steps are usually necessary.

Incidentally, if you import a style file into a DAW, the CASM data will be destroyed. There are a few tricks to prevent this from happening, e.g. use the "MixMaster" program to load the style file and use the "GoTo" function of MixMaster to bring the Style file into the DAW program. But the details would lead too far at this point ...

Just get in touch here if you have any further questions.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Thank you so much for all the info!  Yes, the first thing I will do is get comfortable with the style creator before trying advance stuff.  I was just curious to know what all my options are.  I just found out yesterday that my keyboard won't ship till the end of September, so more waiting for me.  I will definitely reach out with questions as they arise.  Thanks again!
