Hi Guys .. new to this board and I have a S550B  and love it!!   However I have been downloading gig style files from the Tutorial site and my keyboard has trouble recognising some of the STY files .. I grabbed Gary Diamond's pack from the site and a lot of the styles that he created on the S950 seem to work fine but a lot simply give me a blank screen when I navigate to the folder on my keyboard. Is there any secret to choosing STY files?  I tried styles created on the 2000 and 3000 but they don't show up on the keyboard although the STY files are there if I check the folder on my computer.  Any hints please??    (I would also LOVE some new MDB files but those seem hard to get!! )

One reason files don't show up is if the name is too long, or nested in a bunch of folders. Try shortening the name so that it's fewer than 50 bytes (including the extension and icon number).

Fred said it, and don't have to many files in one folder.
They are still there but nothing will show up. Stick to around 300-350 (style)files max in one folder.

Thanks Guys

I will try that later ..I just downloaded the zip file from the GIG page and let it sort out the folders and file names so I will try a shorter file name and put it in a unique folder too so there are no nested folders at all!

That trick worked on a couple of folders but some folders with sty files (maybe not even 20 in there) just give me a blank bar even though I have shortened the file name drastically and removed all the spaces.  Are there some STY files that simply will not load on the S550  ... Are the 2000 and 3000 series earlier or later models??

What do you by "blank bar"? A blank entry in the file display? A silent bar when you play the style?

To answer your last question, all old styles should load and play on your 550. They may not sound perfect if your keyboard doesn't have the voices the style is looking for.

And all files with a valid style extension (.sty, .prs, etc) should show up in the file display.

When I use the wheel to find a folder and then hit the right category button it displays just the folder name and one purple highlighted bar with nothing displayed in it. Other folders will display the folder name and list the STY files in the folder with the purple bar over the first style and, of course, I can then use the wheel to run the purple bar down and back up any hilighted style to play it.  I have attached what the display shows on styles that play perfectly (first 2) and then what the display shows on other folders.

Hi

I THINK that PSR S550 will load SFF1 format styles only.

You can check the style format (SFF1 / SFF2) using my "Style Format Finder" software at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/sff/index.htm

You can convert SFF2 styles to SFF1 styles using my "Style Format 2 Converter" software at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/sf2c/index.htm

Thanks again guys but I found the problem !!  I'm too greedy and with 16GB flash drives I simply loaded too many style files onto the drive and I WAS told don't put more than 300 -350 in any folder ... Funny that the first folders worked but subsequent folder never loaded but when I took a recent folder and copied it onto a second USB the keyboard read the files easily ... You tend to lose track of how many files you have copied as they are so small so it's easy to exceed the 300 -350 limit .. Will buy a bunch of drives tomorrow!!    Not too sure where the S550 slots in but they came out in 2008 and they do have OTS but not sure whether they use SFF1 or SSF2 format.  I do have style files from a S950 and those work fine so mabe the 550 can read SFF2 and SSF1  (Is the PSR 2000 and 3000 earlier or later models than the S550???.. anyone know??)

The limit is per folder, not per stick. You don't need more than one USB stick. You just need to limit the number of files in each folder on the stick.

Note that the limit applies to all files in a folder. If you have only 100 style files, but 400 other files, in a folder, the keyboard display will still come up blank.

The PSR 2000 (I still have one) and 3000 are much older.
PSR-2000 and PSR-S950

And I have the PSR 2100. The PSR 3000 was released in 2004, and uses SFF1 style format. These keyboards have limited menory and cannot read large files. But oh my, they were marvelous in their time!

Hi ChrisH,

since the SFF2 (SFF GE) style file format is not mentioned in the PSR-S550 manual, the S550 most likely still uses the SFF1 format, i.e. the SFF2 (SFF GE) style file format cannot be read by the S550.

Some other restrictions:

• The S550 can only read styles with .STY extension. Other style file extensions (e.g. .prs, .sst, .pst, .pcs, .fps, .scp, .bcs) must be changed to ".STY". In addition, as mentioned, it must be ensured that the style file format is "SFF1".

• Important: The S550 can only read files from the USB stick in the root directory of the stick and in the first three folder hierarchy levels. Files in other sub-folders cannot be used. (See also the attached picture.)

• I did not find a maximum file size for external style files in the manual. However, some models can only load styles with a file size of less than 50 KB. There may also be such a limit on the S550.

• I did not find any information in the S550 manual for the maximum possible length of the file and folder names. For most models, a maximum of 50 characters are possible (including all dots, icon ID and file extension).

P.S.
I recommend to use Peter Wierzba's "PSR Style Database". With this great PC (Windows) program you can manage all your styles (on the computer or on USB sticks) and view them very quickly, sort them according to many different criteria / parameters, search for duplicates and much more. Of course, the style file format can also be displayed in a column so that you can quickly determine e.g. all SFF1 or all SFF2 styles.
>>> http://www.wierzba.homepage.t-online.de/psd/psdmain.htm

I have already written several detailed posts for this program (which can also be used as a MIDI file database) here in the forum. If you have any questions, just get in touch here again.

Best regards,
Chris

Great help ..I still struggling though .. I got the 6 zip files that Bogdan had on offer in the gig files section .. I carefully deleted 10 out of each folder so there were no longer more than 100 in each folder ... Folder #1 -Lists all the files and plays them all as does Folder #2  - Folder #3 only lists styles in the listings from A to B inclusive and no further  (probably 15 styles at most are listed only)  Folders # 4.5.and 6 Just give me a blank line (These are all PSR 3000 styles so they should play perfectly on the 550 but only the listed ones play.  I got them from this page  https://psrtutorial.com/sty/gigDisks/GD_bogdan.html     Great resources though!! and what I can get to play are awesome!!!  Having immense fun and the help is much appreciated   ...(I checked the folders 4,5 and 6 on the computer and all the files are there and all are STY ..I assume they are SFF1 coming from the PSR3000)

OK guys this has got me beat!!!   On my USB I have a folder "USERFILES" and I have a folder called "Charlies Styles"  and all the STY files are inside and the keyboard can select and play them without any issue.   I downloaded all of Tom's files and the folders on each (from TomA to Tom XYZ) all just display a blank bar.  I then deleted ALL of TomB thru to TomXYZ  and still TomA shows a blank bar. So I deleted all but one STY file and made sure it was under 50kb AND had a short file name ...the keyboard STILL showed a blank bar.  What I did next is went to the "Charlie's Styles" folder and played "BAD_MOON.STY" and it plays perfectly so I took that file and copied it into my now empty folder "TomA"  .. Guess what ..it still shows blank even though I KNOW it's a good playable style .  All I did is moved it into a folder with a different name so it SHOULD at least show up!!!    HELP!!!! What am I doing wrong???

Just an extra edit : I took a blank USB and copied just the folders onto the root of the drive and the 550 plays the first and second folders only the 3rd folder onwards shows a blank so could it be that you can only have 2 folders per level ? I took all the files from the 2nd and third folders and copied them into the first and did the same with the 4th/5th sixth  ... but that also limits the number of files as it found the sty files starting with A fine but only half the B files.

Hi ChrisH,

did you notice that some of the unzipped folders of Bogdan's styles contain several unneeded subfolders? I recommend moving all contained styles into the respective main folder first and deleting those subfolders.

If you copy all folders directly to the Root directory of the USB stick, you should have access to all styles in it.

By the way: The file names of Bogdan's styles are relatively long. You could try to shorten the file names. Maybe this is one of the problems.

Best regards,
Chris

It's all very strange as if I add new folders to an existing USB drive or even the STY files they come up blank!  However if I add the folders to a new USB the first maybe 100 work but no others show up ...  I will continue experimenting to see what I can get to work ..I saw that Tom's collection also had a few PRS files in each folder .. I assume they are registration files but are they necessary to run styles ... I will try making really short STY files and see how those work. This is a work in progress I guess but having great fun with them!!

A question I also wanted to know is can you use other Music Database files via USB .. the MDB built into the keyboard is actually more useful than styles as it encompasses OTS as well  ... it would be awesome if one could access an external MDB for extra songs!
