There are so many versions of cubase am not sure which one to buy, I only want a version that will allow me to change the timing in a bar of a recording eg In 4/4 time to change to 2/4 & back to 4/4. Can anyone help please. Many thanks.

ckobu

The simplest version, Cubase LE, will be enough to change the measure.

You can also use free programs like Cakewalk by BandLab or XGWorks, they have quite enough capabilities for processing MIDI data.

Many thanks ckobu for your reply I bid for Cubase 5 on eBay but it was withdrawn for some reason so will have a browse for LE. Thanks again.

Stay far from Cubase 5

You're better off with a Free DAW that's up to date.

Also running on 64Bit

Try Sound Bridge.

Thanks for tips Norman, have downloaded XG works for starters as tipped by ckobu so will see how I manage this.

Look at this picture, it shows how it changes 2/4 to 4/4. The image is from XGWorks.

Genos!

Cubase is only supported on Windows 10 from Cubase v. 10.5 and upward. How time passes... It may be a year or even two since Windows 7 was supported. Which one to buy? You say you've been using computers for how many years now? I know, you didn't say.

I'm not sure (for the moment) that I would be using ANY version of Cubase until things get better sorted out based on the following:

Cubase Pro 9.5 crashes right on start on Windows 7 while Cubase 9.0 can still be opened. Even though error messages may hint at other components for the crash, a Direct2D component is missing. Please make sure that all Windows updates have been installed properly, reboot and try again. https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/115001748064-Cubase-9-5-crashes-on-start-on-Windows-7

While many of our products are compatible with macOS Big Sur on Intel-based systems, please note that we cannot recommend using Apple silicon-based systems for most of our products for the time being... https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/360017403100-macOS-Big-Sur-and-Apple-Silicon-product-compatibility

Cakewalk by bandlad is free, you won't get a better price than that for anything . Used to be around £400 to buy and windows only. Not sure if it still is only windows but is defiantly is free and being updated every now and then.

C-clef

If you're just starting out with MIDI editing software then XGworks probably has one of the shortest learning curves available today, although it is obsolete (i.e. no more upgrades).
It still does everything you need for 'sequencing' and modifying MIDI files. Remember MIDI was, in effect, finalised way back in the nineties. There will be a new MIDI but don't hold your breath.

What used to be Sonar, now renamed back to its original Cakewalk (by Bandlab) is another excellent piece of freeware, but it's a fully fledged DAW, and now very good.
But ... it's pretty difficult to understand if you're new to this.

Other good programs to look at are Sekaiju and Anvil Studio.

Sekaiju is a MIDI sequencing program not a DAW. Freeware.
Anvil goes that little bit further but its focus still seems to be mainly MIDI. The basic version is freeware, there are several add-ons which need to be paid for.

But neither of these have the decode of most of Yamaha's Sy*** messages, which XGworks (and SOL2) do.

The other one, that's a bit more complex is SOL2 which can also be 'discovered' on line, and has references to on this forum.

Hope this helps,
Colin.

C-clef is totally right , if you want an easy way to start to learn to use Sequencers you can't go wrong with XG WORKS  or to be a bit more advanced SOL 2, both by Yamaha, old and out of date, maybe, but for midi work especially with a Yamaha keyboard they are probably the best. There is a lot of help on this site, just type Yamaha Sol or Yamaha Xgworks in the search box and you will find them including links to download.

So kind of you, am really grateful, will try it tonight. Many thanks.

dawn68

Have tried 3 times, I entered the chords on genos in step edit/step record with a minim in bars 12 & 22 & the second time used a semibreve in these bars but it didn't play back with the bars in 2/4. Will try again tomorrow & try entering the chords into XG works.

ckobu

I'm not sure I understood you well. You need to use a style that has a 2/4 measure on bars 12 -22. It's not worth just entering a chord and used the old Style 4/4.

Ah , so it may work if I enter the chords in XG works. Will try that first. Thankyou

dawn68

Tried without success so phoned Yamaha & was told it can't be done as the keyboard won't recognise the 2/4 bar if the style is in 4/4 & he suggested recording slowly & use the half bar fill, so this is the next step. XG works will be useful if you find it easy but unfortunately I don't & it takes up too much playing time trying to work it out. I am very grateful for all the responses & will keep the programme & try again sometime.
