Hi all,

My latest discovery. For now just some demos of nice existing styles to my personal liking. Soon I'll post some demos of my new creations using this. Can't wait to start.

Everything you hear is the arranger playing the style only - no right hand playing whatsoever!

Keep well all,

Hi,

Yes!!! The most AMAZING software I've ever played with. Everything above using audio loops only. Ketron caught a glimpse of this & incorporated into their arrangers. I am convinced that this will be the way forward for most arrangers. It touches boundaries that cannot be attained through pure midi only.

What I've discovered thus far:

1. Just like on a Ketron arranger, you can browse in any audio section into any track of any style. There are literally thousands AMAZING!!! audio sections to choose from.

2. The parts that play semi solo in any style track will faithfully follow whatever chord you are playing - this feature alone is AWESOME!!!

3. You can mix midi and audio to your heart's content.

More as I discover - I am on a steep learning curve. Maybe it's already possible but just think of:

Linking this up to you favorite cheap midi keyboard. Have the facility to call up arranged styles via the keyboard or any other convenient method & viola, you'll have an arranger that simply cannot be touched by anything else currently out there.

Thus what I'm suggesting is a way to control the software mostly from your keyboard/midi controller. Maybe you can and I yet have to discover...

All the best,

Henni

Band in a Box is a truly amazing software I use it all the time for my music. The quality of the "audio styles" is second to none, it also features a TC Helicon Vocal Harmony and I think this one is better than the VH2 of my PSR S970. You really need to try it guys!

I started using BIAB for ATARI PC back in the 1980's.
I us it now daily to print out my Lead Sheet because it's excellent.

I've been using BIAB for 15 years : a great software piece for sure.

Playing with an H/W arranger and with  BIAB are two different things, not in concurrence but in complementarity.
IMHO, arrangers are the best for covers of known songs, BIAB is rather excellent for creation of original songs.

Note also that with BIAB, you have not all the genres of styles we have in an arranger : for example, in BIAB, we have not - or ver very few - ballroom styles as marchs, 6/8 marchs, schlager, charlestons, tangos, pasodobles, musette waltz, chachacha, rumba, etc...
But in BIAB, you find many kinds of very good rocks styles, country styles. The jazz styles are also very amazing.

Within an arranger, you can record the styles and the right hand voices, can mix your song, add effects on the tracks and finally render a complete song.
Using BIAB, you will need to go into Realband - or into any other DAW - to mix your audio tracks with your MIDI, do the mix, add the required effects (including the management of all your VSTs)...A very time consuming approach.

Have you been able to use BIAB like an arranger with a MIDI keyboard?
With fills, switching styles (like A,B,C,D)?

I've gotten BIAB to control my Genos with chords, but not perfectly. I enter the chords in BIAB and have a style that that doesn't do much, have Output Chords checked in BIAB.

Hi,

That is fantastic, really good. :)

May I ask which version of BIAB are you using as there are several levels at varying prices?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Martin,

2020. The style I've used as a basis for the above is called _HARBOUR (Part of RT287). Added a few RealTracks to it to make it sound fuller. You start off with only a midi file out of which you'll extract the melody section - however this also lays down the chords for you. Now you can simply start browsing in styles until you find one to your liking and then start to build your creation on top of that.

All the best my friend,

Henni

Really nice song composed in BIAB from the Rolling Stones
Suppose to do this on a arranger keyboard ?

Probably the Rolling Stones are not that popular as the Beatles are( have some registrations from them for the keybaord to play along)

Arnak

Hi Henni,

Thanks for the reply.

The Stones track sounds amazing!

Intresting software, didn't know it !

Hi,
Band in a box is very good, the only problem is the cost. There are plenty of demos around but no trial option. The full basic program costs around £600 which is a lot of money if you are not sure. Every year they come out with real track upgrades which are not cheap. Pity they don't make a cut down version, perhaps midi only, and if it's suitable, go for the full program.

you are really having fun with that software Henni!! good!!

Everyone who knows me know that I love promoting all my outstanding musical related findings - this product is the ABSOLUTE best discovery yet!!! And not by a little margin only. It surpasses everything I've found to date.

It's the most AMAZING music software I've EVER laid my hands on. The possibilities with this are endless. Plus I am totally convinced that all arrangers will eventually follow this route. In short, it's an Audya or SD9 on steroids. It uses snippets of audio like the current arrangers use midi.

The solo parts are truly AMAZING following the chords you play faithfully. I am astounded that this software is not receiving more attention over here even though this is an Yamaha group. I've never had so much fun in making music.

Now all that must be done is to link this to an arranger so that the software is controlled in real-time from the keys instead of from a PC. I am totally convinced that this will eventually happen. Maybe by Ketron first??? Or maybe BIAB is already thinking along these lines. They are an talented/trailblazing group of people, that's for sure...

In the meanwhile I'll post some more of my creations over here as it gets better as I understand BIAB more - I am currently on a steep learning curve.

Here's my personal opinion for whatever it's worth:

1. BIAB folks are the absolute masters in audio/midi combinations & using audio to create new music. They've completed what I think Ketron started although BIAB might have started all of this.
2. Ketron folks are the absolute masters in converting this technology into an arranger.

Although I know it's unlikely, a collaboration between Ketron & BIAB will produce the worlds first SUPER arranger that will be lightyears ahead of everything else currently available.

AJ, are you seeing this? Maybe this is worth looking into or at least exploring this technology fully as BIAB now mastered everything attempted thus far by Ketron software wise. The built in solo sections will change everything Ketron already does. Not sure if Yamaha would be interested in this as from all current indications they seem to be hell bent on sticking to midi technology only which will soon be in the archives

Maybe BIAB might be one of the first computer music programs ever.

Most musicians all over the world are familiar with BIAB.
A lot of these people do own the program, I guess. ;)

I agree with Henni BIAB is a great, professional tool.

Best wishes, JH

Hi Henni

How much you have now paid for BIAB in order to get this musical functionality you like so much?

Hi Henny,

It is a honest question about what it costs in money to compose in BIAB like you do?

Probably you can start with a pro package, but thats limited to not so many styles to use for,  i think.

Use our creativity is always a good thing..

:D

Henni

Hi Jan,

The standard package comes with a great many styles. Plus I guess when BIAB makes a starting style suggestion for just about any song you can type in, I'm sure all of these come from the standard package and they all sound AMAZING for starters. You can then simply browse in real tracks into the style sections you want.

Cheers,

Henni

Hi Henny

Perhaps, i can use a BIAB basic package and use it for my other composer too
It is possible to made a midi out(export)  from the audio song in BIAB

Best regards

Hi Jan,

I am not aware of ANY software that can accurately convert audio to midi.

It cost $669 for everything you need. It's posted on the site.
And with the old 2018 version you need 120 gig of free space on your hard drive for the real band tracks, it seems.

Are you sure you can use this with our keyboards?

I think this is a stand alone separate program. Right?

Luluc

You're right Drake, BIAB is a standalone program.

Quote from: Henni on Mar 10, 2021, 11:10 PM

Now all that must be done is to link this to an arranger so that the software is controlled in real-time from the keys instead of from a PC. I am totally convinced that this will eventually happen.

There is a basic difference to know in order to understand how they work :

- An arranger is a realtime machine : it plays live the accompaniment/chords you form with the left hand on the arranger keyboard.
- BIAB is NOT a realtime machine : a)you have to enter the chords in a chordsheet with your computer keyboard. You have also to enter the whole structure of the song (Intro, Chorus, Tempo, key...) b) you have to generate the song by hitting the Play button, c)then BIAB plays the song.
If you add a chord, or a bar, etc.. you have to regenerate the song and then BIAB will play the song.

Hope it helps !
