This won't cost you anything.

here is the mp3 version.
Just use Audiocity to do the conversion to midi.

https://mega.nz/#!R1JGmQyB!DT9B8D-jaedp4BamDJpcPAkesXzD9InySSwDAlGo2ak

Step 1. Download a lame_enc.dll file.

Step 2. Download and install Audacity on your Windows/Mac computer.

Step 3. Click "File" > "Open". Select an MP3 file from your computer and import it to Audacity. Or you can drag the MP3 file into the interface directly.

Step 4. Click the "Play" button to play MP3 file.

Step 5. Click "File" > "Export Audio". Once an "Export Audio" popup occurs, choose "Other uncompressed files" from "Save as type" tab.

Step 6. Now you can set format options. Select SDS (Midi Sample Dump Standard) from "Header" tab > Choose encoding according to your need > Click the "Save" button.

Step 7. An "Edit Metadata" window will pop up. You can edit or modify the MIDI audio info here. Finally, click "OK" to convert MP3 to MIDI.

Mikk,

I use Audacity all the time, I never knew you could convert an MP3 to a MIDI. I find it hard to believe the results will be satisfactory, I'm going to have to give it a try.

Thanks for the tip!

One of the problems converting Mp3 to midi is when the MP3 has  vocals in it. The MP3 's you want to convert to midi must be instrumental only, which is the link I gave you. Plus there is no program I can find that removes vocals totally from a MP3 file.

Several state they do, but ------,    I have tried them all, including online versions, unless there is one lurking in the wilderness of the internet that I haven't found.

If someone has a true notation PDF (no scan or copy) of  Scared of the dark by steps,   please post the link here and I will convert it into a midi for you,  melody only.

Its very important that you download the  Lame_enc.dll file. If you don't, Audacity cannot do the conversion from MP3 to midi.
Although the newer versions of Audacity have it built in the library, except for Linux.
Lame_enc. dll is an MP3 encoder module, and it's considered to be the best encoder at mid-high bitrates. The Lame_enc. dll module is also a standard for audio compression. This module converts a music file into any new multimedia format and with very little loss in sound quality.

If you need help  to install the lame file, this might help you.

That is good. I have Lame, but got the message that my file could not be converted to MIDI. So what do I lack. Maybe this enc dill file or what it was called? I have no problem converting to MP3. Really sad now, I really need to get this file converted!

Mikk,

I followed your instruction to the letter and it doesn't seem to work. I picked a simple MP3 instrumental with no vocals. After following your instructions, it says "cannot export media in this format".
Could you review your methods and let us know? It would be awesome to get this working.

Thanks, Rick D.

Try this.

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Import/Export > [_] Show Metadata (de-select)

Click "File" > "Open" and import the MP3 file you want to convert to MIDI. Or you can directly drag the MP3 file into the Audacity interface. Click the "Play" button to play the selected MP3 file. Step 2. Click "File" > "Export Audio", and then an "Export Audio" window should pop up.

Here is the midi conversion of "scared of the dark"

One thing I must stress.
The  fewer  instruments and effects that are in the MP3 the better the midi will sound.

Now Audacity is pretty basic in my opinion for doing this type of conversion.

I think the best converter is "Celemony Melodyne Editor." The basic one is only $99 US.
If  you want to do more work with the final midi file before you save it I would recommend you use "Celemony Melodyne Editor"  which enables you to change and adjust separate tracks to get the sound more to the original MP3 sound, Changing pitch and timing etc.

Melodyne editor, with its Direct Note Access technology, makes possible what had previously been considered impossible: access to individual notes in polyphonic audio material. Correct wrong notes in a piano recording; change the chords in a guitar accompaniment after the recording is over; refashion a sample lick.
Edit music and not just audio data

With Melodyne editor you can edit your audio material in an intuitive and flexible way. Simply move an audio note to a different pitch or a different position. Make notes longer or shorter, louder or softer. Delete notes from chords or add new ones by copying. Use a multitude of scales, create your own or extract scales from audio recordings. Control the timing in detail and even the time course within notes.
I Believe in the K.I.S.S. Principle.

There is no cloud. It is storage space
                     on someones computer.

You say play the mp3 file. Does that mean that the file must be playing while converted to MIDI?

Mikk,

Thanks for taking the time to explain. I had already found the instructions at the link you gave, but to no avail. with several different midis it could not export in that format.  I also upgraded to the latest version of Audacity and that didn't help either. As someone from this group stated years ago, it's like baking a cake. You mix all the ingredients, bake it, then try to separate the flour, milk and eggs. It's impossible. The sample you gave was one instrument and although it did work for you, it would take a lot of editing to make it acceptable.
I will give the program you recommended a try.

Thanks again,

Rick D.

Too bad! I also followed instructions, but to no avail.

I'm a long time user of Audacity, much longer than I've been a member of PSR Tutorial and had the privilege to be associated with this great group of people from all around the world.  To my knowledge, this method has never functioned properly when the MP3 file contains more than a single instrument.
