Make changes to a sequence in a DAW and not lose info

I recorded a MIDI sequence on my SX900 using a style. I want to make two edits before converting to audio: Change several bass notes and to cut and paste some drum fills from a few similar styles to add a little variety to the drums.

I have Cakewalk Sonar Artist. I also have Cubase, but I don't know how to use it.

Thus far, I opened the sequence in Sonar, changed a few bass notes and saved the MIDI under a different name. Now the original style and chord changes don't appear, and the recording doesn't sound as polished as the original MIDI. Should I have saved the changes as a WORK instead of a MIDI?

Thanks in advance!

It's possible that the Sy*** messages got removed when you imported the file into Sonar. I don't have Sonar, so I can't offer guidance about using it, but there were a few old threads where the issue of Sy*** messages in Sonar was discussed, so you might see if you can find those threads.

Janus

I use Yamaha XgWorks
Nothing is removed by saving
I got still the Sy*** and chords
The editor mixer is perfect for the most yamaha keyboards
Also for the meta, sa and pannel voices and effecten

Is there a version that works with Windows 10?

Janus

Yes all version
It works even stand alone
Wen you install it on a usb pen is possible to use it on  other computers
You have only to insert the xgw-font in the windows font dir
Als is it possible to edit the chordtrack
When you make a midifile the chords are never exact on time
You can fix that on the chordtrack
It is even possile to change the style
remove all the arranger tracks
Take a interne xgworks style and put it on the chordtrack after that convert it back to a midi file

Wow. I thought XGWORKS was dead. I'll download it, and hopefully the learning curve is not too steep. It's insane to have these great sounds but to not be able to edit them on a computer without degradation of sound quality or having to learn the cryptic language of Sy***! THANKS!!!

A site called "Informer" says it has XG Works 4.0, but when I download it, it is a version 3 from 2005. Where can I get the latest version. This seems to have no Yamaha Corp support.

Janus

It is a versie only for sale in Japan
There is a crack versie on the internet
it is translated not compleet but enough to work with
You use better the 3.0 + version
There is a trick when it not can installed in win 10
installed it on a win 7 computer
Go to the dir program files
copy the dir xgworks on a usb pen
go to the win 10 computer
search in the xgworks dir to xgworks.exe and start it up
Xgworks start up
The only thing you have to do is to put the xgw font in the win 10 font dir
Search also for a xgworks ini file for your keyboard you can find it on the internet
I don't no of there is already a ini file for the Genos
Standard goes xgworks to the psr9000 and all older models
you can work with it but ony without the mega, sa and pannel voices

beakybird

The program seems to start in Windows 10. I don't see where to import an ini file. Help there would be appreciated.

Search for a ini file with explanation how to install
You have to go in the xgw editor to change to your model keyboard after copie the ini files

beakybird have you tried using the new version of Cakewalk by Bandlab. I have used Sonar for years and now since Bandlab took it over its all FREE. Do google search and you will find it.
I have created songs on my sx900 save as midi file. When you open the new Sonar just drag and drop the midi file into Sonar. It creates 16 tracks with all your data. Hit play and it will all play back thru your keyboard with no issues. This is all set up in preferences when you choose the Yamaha keyboard as your input and output.

You will need to download the Yamaha USB midi driver from the Yamaha site.
I suspect that your issue with the sound being bad is your using the built in midi instruments which will sound like crap.

Not sure if this is what your issue is, but if your using the old version of Sonar Artist and don't have the Yamaha usb driver installed you will not get the results your looking for.

Let me know if I can help you set it up in the Sonar preferences.

Sonar bandlab works only on 64 bit computers
Take aware of that

Hi ,
luv xg works, used it for converting psr styles ( in midi file format) across to my korgs.

The other day I actually tried to see if it would work vice versa and see if I could convert one of my Korg styles that I really missed  ( fortunately I had saved it in midi file format) across to psr.

Proved to be a bit more of a challenge than psr to Korg, but I think I finally got it to work.

Thanks, everyone. I have a Bandlabs account. I'll give another go with Cakewalk before I try XG Works.

In Cakewalk I have the Tyros 4 ini file loaded. The MIDI I made on the keyboard initially sounds good when played through the keyboard. I'm going to experiment with saving the edited file as a Works file instead of a standard MIDI as I read that some of the sy*** is lost.

That's nice
Only  there is no chordtrack and xg editor mixer like in Xgworks
There is a patch on the internet with the ini files for the Tyros 1-5 for Xgworks

I can't even figure out how to choose an instrument in XG Works, and the instrument files that come with the software are different from the ini file for Tyros that I have so I don't think it will work. So I'm stymied with XGWORKS

It not easy in the beginning
but when you get grip on the app you wil feel like in heaven
It is a yamaha keyboard in software
All changes are to be done a 100 times faster than on a keyboard
most with the mouse

Hi Beaky
Did you download the manual?

https://psrtutorial.com/music/articles/XGW1/XGworks.pdf

Check the part about voices ,  in the index at the back of the manual.

I've never used xg for recording songs, just for converting styles, so for my Korg styles I used to pick the sounds in the keyboard itself.

The psr styles that I've loaded into xg works, have the control and program changes in the tracks.
I'm guessing so would  a midi file you created on the sx  have the program and control changes imbedded in the song.

Maybe one  just has to add the control and program change manually if recording a brand new track?

For what I have used this software for over the years, it has been brilliant.

Best wishes
