I would like to share the actions that I took to restore most of my Genos System setup that were altered by the 2.0 Update.

It's too bad that this upgrade has caused so many changes to the basic setup in our Genos keyboards. I'm sure Yamaha has solid reasons for this but even major updates to our operating systems (OS) don't mess so heavily with our settings. Of course, OS updates are largely security fixes that protect us from the low life on the planet who have nothing better to do all day than hack into our computers.

All the same, you would think by adding all these nice features, Yamaha could just do that - add the features and leave our systems alone. At this point, I doubt that I'll upgrade. As a gigging musician, I don't have time to sit for hours and TRY to find out where things went terribly wrong in the last gig because a setting was altered and I missed it.

Stijn, thanks for sharing your setting modifications! I'm sure it's a big help. Also, the video that was posted at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9FsoXSHTDc&t=3729s is very helpful, as long as it covers all the bases.
"Learn" your music correctly, then "practice" it. Don't practice mistakes because you'll learn them.

Thanks for that info.  Looks like Yamaha programmers simply reset the default settings.  I assume they could have written the code to ignore those settings.  Sometimes mistakes are made.  Writing code is a very detailed proposition... just one wrong byte can cause a bug.

In addition, I had to:
-- Reload the Master EQ
-- Set the desired Text size
-- Set the desired Parameter Lock
-- Set the Time Zone
-- Set the Display Out to Lyrics/Text

I doubt very much they could have retained our settings. If they could have, they would have.

Just the price we pay to get a significant update.

Thanks! This is absolutely the most useful thread. I totally forgot time zone...

Umm, I can imagine the discussion (argument?) in some development meeting at Yamaha about preserving the System Settings vs. losing them. Sometimes, you have to make an unpopular decision in order to move ahead.

As long as this happens only once and Yamaha don't make a habit of stomping on the System Settings, well, OK. It's kind of painful because these settings are sprinkled behind so many separate menus/screens...

All the best and thanks, again -- pj

Hi Fred,

I suspect that you are correct about this, but what stopped them from providing a 'System Setting Converter' program for computer, which extracted the settings from an old System Setup (.ssu) file saved from version 1.xx and copied them to a file in the new V2.xx format which users could then simply load into their keyboard and restore their original settings?

For Yamaha's programmers, who already know the structure of both files and what each value  represents, it would appear to have been a simple job to produce such a converter!

Stijn:   Thank you for posting your basic settings.  I might be missing  something
but as I read your comments  they stated  I would not be able to load the old  system settings after installing V2. I thought that it was recommended to save the system settings,so, if they will not reload what should  I be  doing ?  Confusing to me.  I appreciate all the help you provide on this forum.   Unfortunately  this time around , the update is more tedious to complete  than in the past.  Regards, Bob

Hi Bob,

This is the warning on the download page:

Firmware Installation Procedure
Notice:
After you've updated the firmware to this version, the System, MIDI, User Effect, and Registration data are initialized the first time you start up again.

Save the MIDI Setup File and User Effect Setup file before updating, and load after updating.
Save Registrations to the file before updating.
Even if you save the System Setup file before updating, it cannot be loaded after updating.
If you save the Backup data before updating and restore it after updating, the System, MIDI, User Effect and Registration data will not be restored.

It says that all your settings (=System Setup) will be lost, and can't be restored after the update. So, as I mentioned in my Basic Settings, take notes of your settings, or take pictures.
After the update follow your notes and make the necessary changes to return your Genos to its previous state. See my Basic Settings.

Stijn
