I know how to  set my PSR 970 up to use AI Fingering, and it sounds really good.  But I  would like to know if there is a way to lock it in, so that when I turn off my PSR 970 it will remain locked in and be immediately available when I next switch  on my PSR 970.

The standard way is to create a setup registration with all the defaults you want, then load this registration every time you power on.

The Chord Fingering Type is a System Setup function and once set should remain that way until changed, even through power off cycles.

The function is saved in registrations if the Style group is checked when they are memorised, so if your fingering type is changing unexpectedly, it could be one or more registrations that are responsible.

You can prevent registrations from changing any of the style group parameters by checking STYLE in the Freeze list and turning on the Freeze button.

However it is often more convenient to lock only the fingering type by using Parameter Lock with FINGERING checked. This will prevent any registrations from changing the fingering without needing to modify them, but still allow them to change other style group settings.

On a PSR-S970 Parameter Lock is accessed by pressing Function > Utility > tab to Parameter Lock.  Once set, it should remain as set until you change it manually or carry out a System Setup reset.

It used to be a global 'set and forget' setting years ago, but it can now be stored in registration memories, as tyrosaurus said. So you can switch modes in mid-tune if you ever need to.

Yes, I'd advise everyone to create a 'Blank Bank' registration bank (and I mean one with YOUR base settings in it, not just what Yamaha offer on a 'reset') and use that as a starting point for all future registrations. 'Bom-proof' instructions for this are on my website for all keyboards up to PSR-S975 and Tyros 5. I'll create a new sheet for Genos/SX keyboards as and when time allows.
It's not what you play, it's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
