Tyros 5 vs PSR SX-900 voices

Friends,
I wan't to upgrade my Tyros5 to either Genos or latest PSR SX900 keyboard especially for the voices. I need high quality voices especially Strings and high quality audio output like Genos. After Touch facility is not needed.

     Is PSR SX900 voices sound better than Tyros 5 ? Please give your advice.

Not an easy question to answer.

All depends on your personal needs and expectations.

Once the SX900 will be available in October, you are the only one to decide which arranger keyboard is the best choice for you.
To advise you ( now ) might be a bridge too far, IMHO.
You are the decision maker. Nobody else.

If you need high quality strings, Genos is (actually) the only one that features Kino strings.

Why?
A simple answer could be: The aftertouch and the better keybed of the Tyros series.
Those two have a big impact on how a sample sounds between two different models in my opinion.
I don't know what else is inside a keyboard, from a technical point of view, that affects the quality of the sound.
Maybe there are very few new samples is PSX900 that Tyros 5 don't have,
but the missing voices of the SX900 compared to Tyros are more ( scat voices,orchestrated sounds etc.
It's kind like asking if a the newest A class Mercedes can be better than the previous C class.

The new SX is a great upgade from an older psr S or for new buyers but not for those who have a Tyros 5 and want a better sound.
A little better sound,better and newer styles and a lot of stuff that are better from Tyros 5, has only the Genos.

I don't think that anybody can answer that question until the SX900 is out and people have played it.
Until then it is all speculations ...

"Better" is quite subjective.

I do expect that the voices on SX900 will sound different to Tyros 5. That will be because the SX has a newer DAC, plays through internal speakers, and has a different default EQ setup. I expect SX will sound more "live" and "sparkly". I guess some people will find that better, and some won't.

I will probably go and give it a shot in October though just to hear for myself!

I know this isn't quite the same but I own both a Tyros 4 & PSR S975 and I can say that the Tyros 4 still sounds significantly better to me, it just has a fuller/warmer overall sound quality.

I would expect the PSR SX900 to sound even closer to a Tyros/Genos but I can't help but always think that there will be a slight difference in quality and effects.

It does look like SX900 is pretty much a refreshed Tyros 5, only real 'software' feature that's missing is ensemble voice and multi track audio.

I will give the SX a shot and see how it sounds. I would be reluctant to lose out on the T5's 76 key FSX keybed which includes aftertouch, and the 8 sliders though, so it would have to sound really special to make me change. If the release causes the Genos price to drop then that's a different story ...!

Also consider price. A used T-5 averages $3,000, while a new SZ-900 will be less than $2000

If I was a "play at home" player I would definitely go for the Tyros 5
Tyros is in a different league to a PSR
Different sampled voices and many other features.

In the UK, a used T5 is around £1900 and the SX is advertised around £2000. So here at least, used T5 is currently cheaper than SX.

I would not be willing to say T5 sound is in a 'different league' to SX, and that T5 has many more features. I suspect they will compare well, and SX can pull some tricks that T5 can't.

At this stage how can anyone possibly answer this, the keyboard is still not available. All most people have heard is some utube demos same as you can.
Even if this was not the case, and several people had the keyboard, it still would be a matter of opinion by those few who had access to both. The Tyros 5 was already very high quality, so even if there is a difference it will be marginal. And several other issues would matter, are all voices better/worse or just a few specific voices, what speakers were being used on each, is the comparison side by side??
I have not heard a keyboard from the top manufacturers in years that I would say had low quality voices. At the end of the day how can anyone know what your perception of 'high quality' might be?

I have a great idea. Take a Tyros5 and a psr sx900 load a style that will use the same voices on both. Set the Master EQ adn Compressor to the same parameters then wear headphones and listen carefully to see any difference or not in sound quality,

And another thought.  Who arranges the various style parts and decides on the final mix that includes the available effects, reverb, and whatnot?  Surely, such factors weigh-in on how a particular arranger sounds----and in comparison to other models.  I've often wondered how Yamaha approaches the creation and final selection of styles.  Do the style programmers make decisions on the nuances within a style?  Are experienced, professional studio folks, who know and understand audio consulted?  How about those persons with the "golden ears" who create the final masters in recordings?  Might they be helpful in determining the placement and level of instruments in the final mix of styles to help promote a sense of realism?
