I have downloaded midi files and changed them to mp3  and wav files. They play ok as songs but is there anything else they can be used for?

The primary purpose of a MIDI song file is to be played back on a keyboard, sound module, or other MIDI hardware or software.

You can use notation software to display and print the song as sheet music, either all of the channels, some of them, or just one.

You can mute one or more channels during playback so you can try to play those parts yourself.

A MIDI file is usually much, much smaller than an audio file, so you can archive a huge number of songs in a small amount of memory by storing them in MIDI form instead of as audio data.

Thanks for that. I was hoping to use them as a style. Is there any way I can do that?

In theory yes - there is software available to convert parts of the midi to a style. But most people trying this have reported either little success, or huge amounts of editing work to get anything worthwhile.
A style is in itself a midi loop, but it takes a lot of skill, time and know-how to create a good style because it is a short loop that has to work with multiple chord changes, in the the overall arrangement.

You can try midi2style available here: https://psrtutorial.com/util/sorensonMIDI.html

Be prepared for a lot of work.
