Hi there,  how do you fellow registration users, store their registrations to keep them safe;  If I put the styles and multipads I use, and song folder to save into  on a stick, and keep this just for registrations,    would that keep them safe and would they still work o.k.  or do others have better ideas.

I would recommend keeping an additional copy of everything that's on the USB flash drive, such as a backup on your computer's hard drive, in case the USB flash drive becomes corrupted for any reason. :)

I back up my files occasionally (once every six months) to my computer.

Fortunately, I've never had to use a backup, because my registrations have always worked on whatever media I've stored them on.

Hope this helps,
Fred

I only store registrations, custom styles etc on USB, i.e. not on user memory or internal disk. From time to time I copy the contents of the USB onto a folder on the laptop.

The USB root folder has subfolders for registrations, styles etc.

You run into problems if you store these on user memory, then copy to USB, because the relative links get broken.

Hi Marion

Some good advice from Michael and Fred, however just to expand a little.

How you organise (store) your registrations is simply a matter of personal preference, there is NO BEST way of doing it. What work for one person will not necessarily work for everyone.
There is NO safe way.  Backups are a must if you treasure your files.   However when making a backup or copy remember how and where they were stored. Unless you put all the files back in the same place as the originals they will not work.

Your original post was a little confusing, you mention "and keep this just for Registrations"  but talk about saving Styles etc there also.

It does not matter where you store the Registrations (UNLESS you have a GENOS) the styles, songs Pads etc should be considered FIXED as far as storage goes.

Hi Bill, sorry about confusing you, but I am also confused with all this.  The reason I am putting styles and multipads as well as the registration on a usb is because its the style files  and multipads folders,  that I am likely to move around. In fact I have done this before, making a better  storage system and lost all my registration links.  It seems to be working this way, so I will see how I get on. Was just wondering if anyone had a fool proof way of storing.

Thanks for all the replies.

Marion,

There is a fool proof way of storing: don't move files around.

It's so frustrating being unable to help you, when in fact your own posts identify your problem ("I am likely to move around").

In truth, the file storage system you choose doesn't matter much. As you found out, people have several different systems. The key is not to move files around once you've stored them.

If you leave files where they are, you won't have any problem with registrations (or the Genos Songlist).

Hope this helps,
Fred

Bill,

Even with a Genos, it doesn't matter where you store your registrations. The Genos file system is the same as Tyros and PSR.

Hi Fred

I understand what you are saying, however if you wish to use the Playlist Feature you have to consider the Registrations have to be fixed and not moved about.  I do not use Playlist that much so it is not a problem for me, but if people follow your advice about leaving everything where it is it will not be a problem for anyone.

You are correct, Bill, as in typical Yamaha fashion, Playlists have absolute addresses. Another reason not to move files around.
