Hello friends! When you play a MIDI file on the keyboard (S970) you can see the notes when you press score. I wonder; is there a way to save them and print them out? And if so, is it just ready to use? I don't read notes, so I wouldn't know.

You could open the midi file in MuseScore and print the score, Toril.  :)

But be prepared for it to initially look terrible. You may have to do some massaging of the MIDI file, as if it sounds natural, then then timing will be natural, ie not perfect. Musescore, or any other app, will see this and display exactly what's been played, so if a note is played a demsisemiquaver (32nd, for those who use those terms) early or late, you'll see that on screen. Multiply that across the whole score, for all instruments, and you might see musical gibberish!

You can quantise the MIDI file using a MIDI File Editor app to bring its timing to a more robotic, 'accurate' nature, and there are settings you can make in most apps to apply some degree of quantisation there, too.

But, whatever you do, there will almost always be some degree of tidying up to do to make a usable printout.

Have fun, and welcome to the mad, mad world of getting MIDI into print! :)
It's not what you play, it's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

Yes , I've tried that a couple of times and gave up >:( >:(

That is an other feature what members here wanted but the feed back department of Yamaha
only understands Chinese now  ;) ;)

Thanks Andy and Udo. It sounds like this is way over my head at the moment. Hoped for an easy way. I never use notes, but maybe someone wanted to play along to one of my songs. But they are easy to learn by just listening to them.

Hi Toril --

Michael (SeaGtGruff) once recommended Notation Player. There is a free version:

http://www.notation.com/DownloadNotationPlayer.php

I tried it and got a reasonable result -- better than importing into MuseScore or some DAWs.

And, it's free.  :)

Toril,

If the score's of no value to you ("I can't read notes"j, just give whoever wants it the midi file. It's much more versatile than the score. And if they want to print it, let them do it.

Thanks PJ and Fred. Yes. I have MIDI files of all my songs, so that is a good idea.

I also use Notation Composer at times, Toril; however, I'm so familiar with MuseScore I tend to use it most of the time.

When using MuseScore, you must first identify the melody line from all the instruments playing.  Then you remove the other instruments from the score and use that melody line to create a lead sheet.  It's really not that difficult to do, but I do understand that you don't read music and only wanted this for someone else to use.

You might consider emailing me the midi file you would like to reduce to a lead sheet and I'll send you the converted sheet, so you can see what it looks like.  :)

Hello everyone,

To print a midi file, I use Notation Composer and I am happy with it; it is very flexible.

But I have a question related to this issue. Suppose I download a midi file from the web, format it to my convenience with Notation Composer and print it; if then I put the midi file on USB key to in order to read it on my PSR-S970, what I see on my screen (when I press "Score") is sometimes not exactly what I see on my printed sheet. For example, sometimes the score on the screen for say, the melody (R1), switches from G-clef to F-clef back and forth while everything on my printed sheet is in the G-clef. Is there a solution to this problem?

Thanks,

Victor
