How to step edit an existing style part?

Hi,

I do not succeed in editing an existing style part. The button "step edit" in the style creator always applies to the selected recording channel. But when selecting another channel than "rhythm 2" the track is erased.

So how can I step edit an existing style part?

Thank you very much. That seem's to be the solution. Step edit only works for parts of self recorded styles, but not for Yamaha styles. There are locked. I never tried to to this on the S970.

What if you start a style from scratch and record a couple of the channels with some tracks. Then copy and paste the pattern from a LOCKED yamaha style into your newly created style. Can you then edit the track?

I have never tried the above suggestion. I generally find what I need or find something close and then will record in a separate second track of the style any additional notes needed to get the phrasing correct.

No, it is not true. What are you telling me here means you neverbuild CASM section for styles for different type of chords. Yamaha style concept are build on 16 channels, but only 8 (as other brands has too) in front of user. If you build a complex style, with more than 8 channels, you cannot step edit or even activate that channel for recording, without deleting the events bond to that channel. For example, if you record a bass channel which on M/m will do a sequence of notes, but you want for 7th or dim7 to get other sequence of notes, you have to build this style in a soft, Yamaha style creator is very poor soft, and you have to use pc soft to do that. Yamaha do often this technique in styles, and those styles which have more than one channel bond one to other by CASM section, you cannot edit in keyboard.
I do this for at least 10 years, or long time :)

It seems a lot of people do not want top pay for good style editing software.  But StyleMagic will let you edit any of the 16 channels independently. It's darn good software at a fair price.

I thought I should have privided the link as I have done many times before.  There is a demo you can download and try before you buy.  It is fully functional but the SAVE feature is disabled.  I have purchased both StyleMagic YA and MidiWorks YA.  These programs offer full support of Yamaha arranger keyboards.  All future updates are free.

Here ya go!

Yes, it is an awesome software and what is good is Thomas read the messages and he help us every time. He made some updates to StyleMagic after I send him a couple of mails. It also made me an idl editor (instrument definition) to add to default definitions the custom packs ;) I don't think he has the link for that soft on his site.

... why should I pay

Because StyleMagic has so much more to offer and a way to do things that is much easier and faster.  It's the best fully functional style editor out there.

Don't get wrong, I support both Michael and Jorgen's work.  What would we do without their programs. It's just that each software program has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Yes the idl editor is great.  I have added expansion pack voices to my S970 Voice list.  But I made a suggestion to Thomas for an improvement that it should display pack Voices as he does with the Euro Dance Pack because pack Voices do not follow the regular GM/XG Voice Category format.  In other words... the pack Normal Voices should be displayed by name in a list, followed by the drum kits.  And if you combine 2 or more expansion packs it gets very messy because it list the Voices by MSB - LSB and not by name.

This sounds more like a parameter in settings ;)

No it's not a parameter setting.  Thomas follows Yamaha XG format. So when you select a Voice  in the editor, you see first Program Change then a second field for MSB-LSB.  This doesn't work so well for expansion packs.  We need to see the list of Voices as they are displayed on the keyboard.

I hope Thomes will fix this.

Style unlocker does not always works.

Style Split and Splice : http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/sands/index.htm
With Style Split and Splice you can create a midi and non midi part.
When split the style the midi part can be modidied with any sequense program.
When finisch just splice it with the non midi part into a style again.

With MixMaster : http://psrtutorial.com/MB/mixMaster.html
You can directly modify style events etc...
