Hi all, I have noticed that when I do a factory reset the registration memory stays as they were before the reset. I thought a factory reset took it back to as when left the factory?

Hi @shezza,

I don't know which reset method you are talking about here.

If you hold down the highest (right-most) piano key ("C6" on a 61-key keyboard, "G6" on Genos models) when switching on, a System reset is performed, i.e. the user-defined system settings are reset to the factory settings. This has nothing to do with the registration memory.

If you want to reset/delete the Registration Memory, i.e. the data of the currently loaded registration bank (so that none of the 8 registration buttons are lit), hold down the second highest key ("B5" on a 61-key keyboard, "F#6" on Genos models) when switching on.

However, you can also touch the "Menu" icon and select "Registration Edit" at any time in the Registration Selection display instead. There you can delete the data from any individual (or all) registration buttons (1 - 8) in the current bank. You can use this, for example, if you save an existing registration bank under a new name in order to duplicate it. Assuming you only want to keep the data of Reg button #1 from the new bank, go to "Registration Edit" as mentioned above and you can delete the data of all other Reg buttons there. To get the last state, you must of course save the bank again (in Registration Bank Selection display touch "File icon > Save > Save Here > OK > Overwrite ? > YES").

Another reset method can be found via "Menu > Utility > Factory Reset/Backup". On page 1/2, checkmark the boxes of the desired parameters then touch [Factory Reset] to initialize the settings of the parameters which are checkmarked. See also the following screenshot (from SX920 Reference Manual, page 138):

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Why are you doing factory resets? I've owned Yamaha keyboards for 30 years, and never had to do one.

Good question, Fred!

After major Firmware updates (e.g. from Genos V1.41 to V2.00), a System reset is even recommended by Yamaha. But otherwise I have never needed a System reset or even a complete Factory reset (from the PSR-9000 days through T4, T5, Genos1 to today with Genos2). ;)

I think it makes no sense to reset everything to factory settings, unless a system error occurs. You don't normally play with pure factory settings, you just set everything up as you want. Many factory settings are not optimal (not to say pointless).

In order to be able to quickly restore a certain panel state, I recommend using "Startup Registrations" (also called "Setup Registrations"). These can either only contain certain settings (e.g. Pedal or Assignable settings), or you can simply tick all the boxes in the Memory dialog so that all Panel settings that can be saved in Registrations are memorized in the relevant Startup Registration.

Best regards,
Chris

I'm using the Factory reset a bit. The keyboard is new to me and quite different to my previous, so I've been doing a lot of experimenting with many of the features, also figuring out registrations and deciding a file system. I like being able to reset it all back to a blank slate, it gives me freedom to mess around and to mess up a bit, knowing I have that to start again from.

I'll settle down eventually and maybe not use it much, but it's been useful while learning this keyboard.

Hi!
I had bad luck with my Genos2 .
When I was going to load my backup from Genos1.
Everything froze, I had to do a "Hard reset"
Since then everything has worked normally.
I have never had to use this trick on any of my keyboards before.
So thank you very much for your help Chris.
