Hi All
Can anyone advise me on using Monitor speakers to improve  the sound in a small venue situation.
I was thinking of getting M-Audio
BX4  4.5 Studio Monitors.
I would be grateful for any advice or opinions also recommended speakers.
I have read a similar query but as a Newbie was unsure how to join in.
I have a PSR sx900.
Thank you
Alun

Hi,

Active speakers are excellent for the purpose because they can be connected directly to the keyboard and set up with relative ease.

Monitors the size of the BX4 may be good for near-field listening, but will have limitations when used as sound reinforcement. It's all about physics, but I would not expect them to have the capacity to play much louder than the SX900 itself.

Clarity can be improved greatly, though, simply from the ability to place and direct the speakers separate from the keyboard (also, the keyboard chassis/casing is far from an ideal cabinet for the built-in speakers). For better sound coverage, you may want to elevate the speakers on stands (the BX4 doesn't have mounts; You may be able to find bolt-on options that secure the speakers), but this will of course be an added expense.

Hi H
Thank you for replying.
I forgot to mention that I have speaker mounts attached to my Keyboard table stand. At the moment I have 2 Sharp passive speakers the remains of my old hifisystem. I was reluctant to discard them . As they each have a tweeter, a mid range and bass speaker. 2, 4 and  6 inch
I have been experimenting with them using an old Torque amplifier that has a few issues like an irritating "hum".
This would be an alternative if a reliable inexpensive amplifier
could be added.
I thought that monitor speakers would be adequate but as you mentioned near field I understand that I need to project the sound which might still  be possible as they would be mounted.
I apologise for not mentioning that originally.
Thank you again for your reply

Not to be negative in any way, but "A small venue situation" covers a lot of ground and would indicate something other than a large room in a home.  Large monitors are expensive:  small less expensive ones obviously do not do the same job and can lead to disappointment.  A post in another forum discussed using stereo speakers in lieu of monitors and recommended a Fosi ZA3 amp or similar piece of gear as a cost effective tool when coupled with good speakers. I only know that I wish I had tried that option before springing for really large monitors.

As promised Iam happy to say that I decided to get M-Audio bx4 4.5 monitor speakers.

I am really pleased with their performance and amazed at the difference in the sound quality
I think that there will be sufficient output for our keyboard club venue.
Looking forward to using them next month.
Thanks to all who replied and those who contributed in previous posts.
Will keep all updated  on the outcome.
