CVP-909:

Can playlist entries be sorted, automatically, (A-Z), using only the CVP-909?

Hi @bqb,

According to the owner's manual, there is obviously no "Sort A>Z" button in the Playlist display on the CVP-909, and apparently it wasn't added by the current firmware V1.04 either. Therefore, you cannot automatically sort playlists alphabetically, but you can only move up or down a single record.

To sort a CVP-909 playlist, you would have to copy the relevant Playlist file (.tsv) to a USB stick and then edit it on the computer, e.g. in a spreadsheet program such as Excel or Google Sheets.

By the way, the Playlist Sort function was introduced with V2.00 on Genos1. It is also available on Genos2 and PSR-SX920/720, but as far as I know not on SX900/700/600.

Best regards,
Chris

The whole idea of a playlist is to have songs in set order, not alphabetical.

If you want alphabetical, just go to your registrations. They're in alpha order.

Yes, I basically agree with you, Fred. But a Playlist entry can do a little more than just loading a registration bank. For example, you can directly activate a specific registration of that bank  with one click and call up the text/lyrics viewer if desired.

So, in some cases, I think it's good to be able to sort playlists alphabetically. It's certainly not without reason that Yamaha added this to Genos1 V2.0 and kept it to Genos2 and now SX920.

Not that I would ever admit to doing such a thing, but:

Suppose it was late at night and the mood was mellow.  One was entering several newly created song entries at the end of an existing playlist, in no particular order.  Let's just say 10 new songs were entered on page 10 of a playlist.  Rather than take time to manually Up/Down each entry to organize the playlist A-Z, (to coincide with already, automatically sorted registrations, AND an EXTERNAL setlist in your sheet music app, on an iPad!), it could be handy to automate the sorting of the now updated playlist, and bring the ENTIRE system into alignment!

Of course, you could remove the portable media, leave the CVP, put it into your computer, bring up your sorting program ..., once all is well, THEN go back to the CVP ...  It's late, you're tired and this is just not the most efficient workflow. If there were only a dedicated A-Z sort button on the playlist screen of a fairly new CVP909, purchased in 2024, with all the technology Yamaha engineers could envision, respecting their profit-driven constraints, save for this ONE exception!

Not to mention: What if there was a boo boo entry in the playlist on an earlier page that didn't get noticed, and manually sorting things based on that, just further messes up the playlist, setlist alignment, etc.?
