playing .sty files on the cpu

Hello,

I want to be able to play .sty files on my computer and listen to the music as if it is being played on a Yamaha keyboard. However, when I play them on a MIDI player, they come out weird. The tempo and rhythm is there, but the sound is flat and there are no instrument sounds.

Does anyone know why this is and if there is a program that can play them properly on a CPU?

thank you!

Rick D.

GWitty,

Unless you have a top quality sound card on your PC, this is the result you will get. The best solution is to hook your keyboard directly to your computer via USB and some software available at Yamaha for free.

Your computer does not have the voices that your keyboard has. So it substitutes crappy ones.

You need to play the styles on your keyboard to get the intended sound.

There are no standalone software solutions for this? Yamaha doesn't produce a program that will allow the files to be played on the cpu without the keyboard being connected?

thanks

Gwitty,

Try playing them thru Audacity (It's free) and see what you think.

It won't be as good as playing thru keyboard but it is pretty good. Also for a style file you may need to change the file.sty to file.mid.

Just be careful if downloading audacity.there is one site that offers to also download a program called Muse Hub at the same time if you want. It's had quite a few bad reviews on the net that once it's on your machine you can't get rid of it. Might be true or not but just take care.

No, they don't

Because that would effectively mean producing a software-only version of the arranger itself. And that's not something they do (for now at least)

Indeed, styles will never sound the same on pc as on the keyboard but there are some "decent"solutions to preview styles on pc. You need a program that can play the style files and you need midi instruments on your pc (the sound of the standard windows midi mapper is terrible):

1. The MIDItoStyle program of Yamaha is a very nice midi player for pc and with a workaround, you can also listen to style files. Just change the file extension of the style file into ".mid" and you can load the style in the program. You can then listen to the different intro/main/ending parts of the style (a style file contains meta events that are used by MIDItoStyle for assigning parts to the style file).

2. I use CoolsoftVirtualMIDISynth with some of the soundfonts that can be found on the corresponding website. It may take some effort to get things set up but the result is quite good.

Giglad is a VST instrument that suppose to play Yamaha styles, but I never tried it myself.
