Installing Expansion Pack

Hi, I posted this comment yesterday but got no response.  I think I probably posted it in the wrong area so I am re-posting here.

I am about to import several Expansion Packs into my PSR -SX900 and would like to know if there is a way to preview each song and remove the ones I don't want BEFORE installing them on the keyboard.  Thank you in advance for any assistance.

hello Carlos,
Officially that is not possible, because with YEM we can't export pack content (styles, for example) individually on disk. That is, at least once you need to install whole pack and make notices about particular voices, styles or registrations -so next time you know what you wish to have and what not. I recommend doing it that way anyway, because that makes sure that everything works as it should.

Sorry I must've missed this, but AFAIK Bogdan is correct; and I strongly suggest what he said: install the entire pack, and then go through all the styles (and check every voice that's used in the styles, to see which are presets and which are expansions). If you find some voices that are similar enough to the presets, by all means switch to those (and re-save the style thusly) and note which sounds you can remove from the pack.

Or even better, pay attention to the expansion voices list, (print out the list or screen capture) and then cross out every sound from the pack that is used in the styles (don't forget OTS as well!) and then cross off every voice that *does* appear, you'll be left with the list of purely optional voices that you can remove from your installation.

But if you remove voices willy nilly, you may find a lot of the styles no longer function properly.

-that is VERY important.

To make that a bit easier, I created a small tool where you can clearly see what voices in pack are used in particular style, without the need to install the pack (only works for *.ppf packs). If interested, you can download it here (please read short manual first).
Again, I still recommend installing the whole pack first -especially if you're still learning your keyboard.

Oh very cool, Bogdan!

I haven't touched a compiler in 21 years now :p I barely remember how to pseudo-code

Mark  :)
Nowadays I don't code as much as I used to... I only do it when I'm forced -with age, time becomes more precious  ;D

Good morning,

To read the styles of the PPF packs, it is not useful to install them on the keyboard via the YEM.

I advise you to use the "Style extractor" application.

The styles will be extracted and you can use them.

Good day

Yes and no. The .sty files will be extracted, but you have no idea which will work due to not having the samples

If you use style extractor and then Bogdan's program, you can probably figure out exactly the minimum size of the pack requried*

Unless you go in and replace as many voices as possible with similar stock on board sounds, then re-save those styles into the sample pack. Then you've hit the actual minumum: which changes depending on the board you're using as its basis. ie you will need cello and violin samples if you have an sx700/s970/s975 if your style heavily depends on a solo cello; but if you're on an sx900, T5, G1 or G2, the built in cello is already quite similar.

I would like to explain something about the program that I made (Y-StyleRevoice) and that I have mentioned in this thread -it's in manual.. but who reads that  ;)

When you open the pack with Y-SR, it will list all voices (with MSB-LSB-PCn) inside the pack and all styles. If you click on particular style, you can export it on disk. But what's more important, in Style voices tab, you can see all voices that selected style is using and it's clearly indicated if these voices are keyboard preset voices or voices inside the pack.
That is, by selecting some style, you can see which voices (inside pack) you need to include if you wish to create (YEM) install pack with that particular style -which was the main reason why I made this tool.
